Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or similar related work experience
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in utility inspection, utility construction, or related infrastructure projects
  • Strong understanding of utility systems (water, sewer, gas, electric, telecommunications)
  • Familiarity with excavation, trenching, and underground utility installation standards and best practices
  • Knowledge of utility relocation processes and coordination with utility owners
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations related to utility construction (e.g., OSHA, NJDEP, and local codes)
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify and document non-conformance issues
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective coordination with contractors, utility companies, and project stakeholders
Responsibilities
  • Inspect utility work, including the relocation, installation, and protection of water, sewer, gas, electric, and telecommunications infrastructure
  • Ensure utility construction activities comply with approved plans, specifications, contracts, and applicable codes
  • Monitor construction progress to ensure adherence to project schedules
  • Identify and document deficiencies, and recommend corrective actions as needed
  • Serve as a point of contact between contractors, utility companies, and project management
  • Coordinate with utility owners and agencies to minimize disruptions and resolve conflicts in a timely manner
  • Provide updates on utility work progress and issues to the project team
  • Maintain accurate daily inspection logs, photos, and reports detailing work performed, issues encountered, and resolutions
  • Assist in reviewing contractor submittals, RFIs, and change order requests related to utility work
Desired Qualifications
  • Certification as a Construction Inspector (e.g., NICET or ICC certification)
  • Experience working in rail, tunnel, or other heavy civil infrastructure environments
  • Familiarity with New Jersey utility providers and permitting processes
  • Experience managing union electrical contractors or any prior experience dealing utility companies (like PSE&G or Con Edison) would be an added bonus
