Requirements
  • Basic Life Support certification required upon hire; thereafter, must maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) either from American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • At least 1 year work experience in a healthcare facility or in a .6 full-time equivalent Patient Care Technician I position at MUSC College of Health Sciences (CHS); or a college degree; or active enrollment in nursing school with completion of Nursing Fundamentals from an accredited institution; or active enrollment in a healthcare-related field from an accredited institution; or a Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant, or equivalent training.
  • Credentials: Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
  • Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking; ability to climb stairs; ability to work indoors and outdoors in temperature extremes; ability to work from elevated areas; ability to work in confined/cramped spaces; ability to bend, twist, kneel, squat; ability to perform pinching, gross motor, fine motor, and grasping movements; vision and hearing requirements including 20/40 vision; color perception; good peripheral vision; maintain tactile sensory functions; ability to work rotating shifts and overtime; ability to work in a latex safe environment; ability to lift and carry 50 pounds unassisted; ability to lift from floor to 36 inches unassisted; ability to lift from 36 inches to overhead 25 pounds; ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force; ability to perform respirator use where required.
Responsibilities
  • Keep patient rooms tidy and sanitized
  • Assist patient with everyday needs (personal hygiene, using the restroom, grooming, etc.)
  • Monitor vital signs (temperature, pulse, etc.) or EKG signals and patient condition
  • Assist nursing staff in administering basic treatments
  • Ensure rooms have adequate patient care supplies, linen is clean
  • Assist patients with particular issues or needs
  • Provide appropriate emotional support
  • Place patient on cardiac monitor
  • Empty drains, ostomies, foley bags
  • Perform blood sugar checks
  • Assist with other duties assigned by the department leader
