Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in CHM (Chemistry).
  • Evidence of teaching potential.
  • A thorough knowledge of the principles of Chemistry sufficient to teach courses from basic Chemistry through college-level Chemistry.
  • Understanding of process-based writing and familiarity with adult learning theory.
  • Familiarity with pedagogical strategies that enhance students' critical thinking.
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population and communicate effectively with students on a regular basis.
  • Knowledge of student-centered tutoring strategies, Microsoft software, and appropriate instructional and course management software.
  • Verbal and written interpersonal communication skills, computer skills including Microsoft software, and the ability to communicate with small and large groups.
  • Proficiency in designing and grading tests and creating effective instructional materials.
  • Ability to multitask, collaborate with others, and work independently.
  • Ability to use technology to enhance instruction and apply effective classroom management techniques.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with faculty and administration and demonstrate professional and collegial behavior.
  • Ability to support at-risk students and commitment to continued professional growth and development.
Responsibilities
  • Teach college-level and pre-college-level Science Composition and science-related courses.
  • Create an optimum learning environment, respond to student needs, manage effective instructional activities, demonstrate professionalism, develop cooperative work relationships, support college administrative requirements, and maintain competency in the instructional field.
  • Attend department and college workshops, training sessions, development activities, and meetings as required.
  • Participate in student learning assessment activities and perform assigned departmental duties.
  • Develop course syllabi using the assigned syllabus shell, including evaluation procedures and assignment calendars aligned with the course outline.
  • Prepare lesson plans and conduct classes at scheduled times using department-approved texts and following department guidelines for course content and best practices.
  • Meet all scheduled classes on time for the fully allotted time and follow Owens Community College standards for web instruction when teaching online.
  • Create and evaluate assignments, assessments, and activities; assign grades; return student work promptly; and maintain accurate attendance and grade records.
  • Report attendance and final grades by published deadlines and submit electronic copies of grade books, attendance records, syllabi, and other requested documents.
  • Administer course evaluations as instructed by the college.
  • Use the college course management system, Microsoft Office Suite, and other required approved programs.
  • Access the Owens email account daily, respond to required messages within 48 hours, check the campus mailbox weekly, respond to student inquiries, and meet with students outside class when necessary.
  • Support the college, School of STEM, mission, vision, and core values.
