Requirements
  • Graduation from high school or a GED equivalent.
  • One to two years of water/sewer system work is preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A valid Oklahoma state driver's license and a Commercial Driver's License Class B with an air brake endorsement, or the ability to obtain one.
  • Must be insurable with the City's insurance carrier.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Certificate of Competency at the D level or higher, as issued and required by state law by the Department of Environmental Quality, within one year of appointment.
  • Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
  • Skill in operating the listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods, work safely, communicate effectively verbally and in writing, establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public, and understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to use hands and arms to operate objects, tools, or controls; stand; talk or hear; and perform occasional walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and smelling.
  • Ability to frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Required vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Responsibilities
  • Inspect and repair the water distribution and sewer systems at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly.
  • Maintain records relating to inspections and maintenance activities of both systems.
  • Determine the locations of gas, telephone, power, television, water, and sewer lines from appropriate sources before excavation.
  • Contact residents and business owners in areas where services will be disconnected, explain when services will be shut off, and communicate how soon service will be restored.
  • Maintain equipment and tools by cleaning and checking them after use.
  • Drive trucks of various sizes and weights to load, haul, and unload equipment, gravel, and sand.
  • Inspect and perform preventive maintenance on assigned equipment, refer defects or needed repairs to the Crew Foreman, and clean equipment.
  • Perform duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Perform labor for construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying, and backfilling.
  • Cut, fit, lay, repair, tap, clean, and flush water mains, pipe, gates, and fittings; install and repair services, fire hydrants, and drinking fountains; and assist in shutting off broken sections of water mains.
  • Operate power construction and maintenance equipment used in the Water/Sewer Systems department.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and near moving mechanical parts, wet or humid conditions, vibration, high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and electrical hazards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
