Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with students to understand and develop realistic and attainable educational and academic goals and provide input on majors, minors, future education, and career options aligned with those goals.
  • Educate students about and prepare and assist them with academic processes, including registration, add/drop, Q drops, withdrawals, and curriculum-change submissions, by sharing university and college policies, program requirements, and transfer-credit decisions.
  • Review students' academic records and counsel them regarding core and degree-course selection, the implications of selected courses, and exception requests.
  • Provide input on probationary decisions.
  • Create and maintain updated relevant records and notes, including student contacts and advisor notes.
  • Engage the student population through in-person and online outreach methods to cultivate professional relationships and keep students informed about critical personal, academic, and professional deadlines, updates, information, and events.
  • Share available academic, professional, health, and wellness resources with students and refer students with identified needs as appropriate.
  • Monitor students' progress through their programs by reviewing and assessing academic records to determine progression status and degree-requirement completion, and identify and refer students who may need additional intervention and guidance.
  • Assist in planning and/or delivering department-related advising, student-success, retention events, and academic campaigns, including new-student conferences, first-semester advising, and inquiries from prospective students.
  • Assess individual students' stage of academic development and promote their growth by determining suitable developmental tasks.
  • Complete up to 20% training per year through in-class and on-the-job programs, including Advisor Onboarding and Becoming an Advisor.
