What believers are saying

  • Larry Fink’s co-chair role stabilizes leadership and deepens access to global capital.
  • January 2026 Abu Dhabi and other C4IR launches extend WEF’s operating footprint.
  • May 2026 women’s health research creates defensible policy leadership in an underfunded sector.

What critics are saying

  • Børge Brende stepped down February 26, 2026, exposing fragile post-Schwab governance.
  • WEF’s own probes into Schwab and Brende damage elite trust and sponsor loyalty.
  • If Davos loses relevance, WEF becomes a talking shop, undermining its core franchise.

What makes World Economic Forum unique

  • Davos still convenes CEOs, heads of state, and regulators no competitor matches.
  • WEF’s C4IR network expanded January 22, 2026 with five frontier-technology centers.
  • Its agenda-setting research, like May 2026 Women’s Health Innovation Radar, shapes global policy.

Women's health receives only 20% of R&D funding despite $1T economic opportunity by 2040

Women's health receives only 20% of health research and development funding, despite representing a potential $1 trillion economic opportunity by 2040, according to the World Economic Forum's new Women's Health Innovation Radar. The radar, developed with the Kearney Health Institute, Gates Foundation and Wellcome Leap, analysed data from 2016 to 2025 across 10 high-impact conditions. It found that over half of women's health funding concentrates on just two areas—ovarian cancer and menopause—whilst conditions like ischemic heart disease and premenstrual syndrome receive minimal investment. Fewer than 2%–3% of clinical trials are women-specific. The research reveals three critical gaps: funding allocation, evidence gathering and product translation. Improving women's health could yield 75 million disability-adjusted life years annually and boost global GDP by $1 trillion by 2040.

TII and World Economic Forum launch Abu Dhabi Centre for Frontier Technologies at Davos

The Technology Innovation Institute (TII) and the World Economic Forum have launched the Abu Dhabi Centre for Frontier Technologies during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos. The new centre joins WEF's Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution Global Network. The centre will focus on quantum computing, robotics, propulsion and space systems, and related AI applications. It aims to advance frontier research and development, shape global policy on emerging technologies, and foster international collaboration for real-world deployment. TII CEO Dr Najwa Aaraj said the centre will push boundaries of frontier R&D whilst enabling breakthrough science to move beyond the lab into practical application. Abu Dhabi joins other C4IR centres in countries including the US, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Japan and India, strengthening the UAE's position as a global hub for science and innovation.

BlackRock CEO takes helm at Davos as World Economic Forum opens without founder Schwab

The World Economic Forum opened in Davos on Monday under new leadership, with BlackRock CEO Larry Fink largely taking over after founder Klaus Schwab's departure. The New York Times described Fink as "a quiet force reshaping the forum". Fink's leadership offers an opportunity to reinvent the conference, which critics argue has fallen out of step with global trends, according to a former WEF communications head. Semafor noted that "Fink himself was once a proto-Davos Man", suggesting his evolution mirrors broader changes at the forum. The shift marks a significant moment for the annual gathering of world leaders and business executives, as it seeks to regain relevance under fresh direction.
