Requirements
  • A sustained record of technical leadership across more than one team or a broad product area.
  • Deep backend architecture and production experience in complex applications, services, or platforms, including scaling or governing APIs, service platforms, data systems, modular monoliths, or shared backend components.
  • Experience modernizing a monolith or legacy backend architecture in production, using modular architecture such as bounded contexts, package encapsulation, ports and adapters, service extraction, event-driven boundaries, or an equivalent approach.
  • The ability to create alignment through clear written proposals and decision records so decisions are documented, understood, and adopted without constant escalation.
  • The ability to balance customer outcomes, delivery speed, technical health, reliability, and long-term platform investment.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and shaping standards through code review, documentation, and example.
  • Production experience with AI-assisted or agentic engineering workflows, including the ability to evaluate and improve how a team adopts them.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the technical design and delivery of large backend initiatives that span teams, and identify and remove systemic bottlenecks across product and infrastructure groups.
  • Drive modular backend, service, data, and platform architecture; modernize the monolith and legacy backends toward modular, reusable, and independently operated systems while preventing fragmentation and service sprawl.
  • Define and improve standards for APIs, contracts, compatibility, schema evolution, testing, security, performance, observability, operability, and maintainability, as well as build, test, deploy, release, rollback, and production-readiness practices.
  • Create patterns for dependency management, data ownership, eventing, failure isolation, service maturity, and operational documentation.
  • Establish Go service patterns and Kubernetes operating practices where they matter to the production estate, and guide Rust adoption where it solves a systems, security, performance, or supply-chain problem.
  • Participate in on-call and incident response for owned systems, act as a technical escalation point during complex incidents, and turn lessons into architectural and operational improvements.
  • Shape technical direction across teams without formal authority and partner with Product and Engineering leadership on platform-level roadmap decisions and investment trade-offs.
  • Mentor Senior and Intermediate engineers, shepherd technical debt reduction and reusable patterns that improve throughput, and raise the technical capability of the wider team.
  • Lead team-level adoption of AI-assisted and agentic workflows, including quality, security, privacy, and operational guardrails, and help engineers direct, validate, reject, and course-correct agent output.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Go services and APIs at scale.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and cloud-native operations, including deployment, scaling, observability, rollback, and production readiness.
  • Experience adopting or owning Rust in production for systems, security, performance, or platform components.
  • Experience with Ruby/Rails modularization and large-monolith modernization.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL scaling, data partitioning, queues, messaging, or distributed systems.
  • Experience in security-sensitive product or software supply chain engineering.
  • Experience across SaaS, single-tenant, self-managed, or air-gapped deployment constraints.

GitLab provides a unified DevOps platform that brings together the tools needed for software development, including code hosting, collaboration, CI/CD, issue tracking, and security, all in one application. It works by offering a single subscription-based platform where teams can plan, write, test, review, and deploy code through automated pipelines, reducing the need to manage separate tools. This differs from many competitors that require using a collection of separate products; GitLab consolidates these capabilities into one integrated solution, helping teams work more efficiently. The company’s goal is to help organizations speed up software delivery and improve collaboration by simplifying the DevOps process and continuously updating the platform with new features and improvements.

GitLab releases single-tenant AI and security suite for regulated enterprises

GitLab has released version 19.3 and expanded its Duo Agent Platform, allowing enterprises to run agentic AI inside single-tenant environments whilst managing credentials across their software development lifecycle. The update enables regulated organisations to deploy AI and security workflows within strict audit boundaries through GitLab Dedicated environments. The move addresses compliance requirements for data-sensitive customers but introduces potential complexity and cost challenges as the company scales AI features. GitLab's investment case hinges on whether AI tools like Duo Agents can drive upgrades and usage amid intense competition and slowing customer growth. The company's narrative projects $1.5 billion revenue and $186.3 million earnings by 2029, requiring 15.3% yearly revenue growth.
