Requirements
  • The candidate must hold a current New Hampshire registered nurse license.
  • The candidate must be an Associate of Science in Nursing graduate.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is required before completion of orientation for applicable critical care registered nurse roles.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification is required before completion of orientation for Urgent Care and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit roles and before assuming care for critically ill pediatric patients in the Emergency Department; Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course may substitute for Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute training must be obtained within six months of hire when applicable.
  • The candidate must complete all unit-specific competencies and requirements for caring for critically ill patients during orientation and annually as assigned.
  • The candidate must analyze patient assessments and data, communicate findings, document actions, and implement care accurately and promptly.
  • The candidate must maintain current practice standards, including American Nurses Association standards, the New Hampshire Nurse Practice Act, and specialty standards.
  • The candidate must follow hospital safety procedures, protocols, Just Culture practices, HIPAA compliance policies, and the chain of command.
  • The candidate must complete accurate clinical documentation and care plans in the electronic health record.
  • The candidate must appropriately delegate care and unit activities to other nursing personnel.
  • The candidate must respond to emergency situations according to department and role requirements, including Code Blue and rapid response events.
Responsibilities
  • Provide professional nursing care to patients within an assigned hospital unit in support of medical care directed by medical staff and hospital policies.
  • Participate in quality improvement planning and processes for the area of practice.
  • Respond promptly to patient monitoring alarms and collect, label, and send ordered specimens to the laboratory.
  • Provide emotional support to patients and families and communicate patient information through handoffs, walking rounds, and provider interactions.
  • Complete hourly rounding with Licensed Nursing Assistants on assigned patients.
  • Collaborate with providers to complete assessments and perform bedside procedures.
  • Participate in unit or organizational committees, councils, shared governance, peer review, survey readiness, and annual evaluation processes.
  • Mentor new nurses and other department disciplines through preceptorship and other methods as requested by department leadership.
  • Maintain safe patient, visitor, and staff environments and identify and correct patient-care safety issues.
  • In the Emergency Department, triage patients, determine Emergency Severity Index priority, perform focused assessments, reassess patients, initiate protocol orders, recognize life-threatening conditions, and support patient throughput.
  • In the Cardiac Catheterization and Angiography Laboratory, learn complex technologies, manage critical-care medication infusions, conduct pre-admission history and medication reviews, maintain sterile fields, prepare equipment and supplies, administer and document procedural sedation, and support emergency cardiac interventions.
  • In the Cardiac Catheterization and Angiography Laboratory, monitor hemodynamic waveforms, manage arterial and venous sheath removal, and assist physicians with intra-aortic balloon pump, Impella, flow wire, Opsens, and intravascular ultrasound procedures.
  • Participate in on-call assignments and remain within a 30-minute radius when on call.
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility through accurate timekeeping and appropriate patient-supply utilization.
Desired Qualifications
  • Basic Dysrhythmia certification preferred or obtained prior to completion of orientation.
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale certification preferred or obtained prior to completion of orientation.
  • Certification in the specialty is preferred.
  • Cardiac catheterization and angiography laboratory candidates should have 3–5 years of critical care experience.
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support is preferred for critical care registered nurse roles, with specified orientation exceptions.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support is preferred, with role-specific completion requirements.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course is preferred and required within 18 months of hire for the Emergency Department.
  • Trauma Certified Registered Nurse is preferred and required within one year of hire for the Intensive Care Unit and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute training is preferred or may be obtained before completion of orientation.
  • Membership in a professional organization is preferred.
