Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • For hires on or after May 1, 2024, candidates must have current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse, completion of the internal WVUM Surgical Technologist Trainee program with at least six months in the job, completion of an externally accredited Surgical Technology program, completion of a Registered Nurse program, or two years of previous scrub experience.
  • The employee must be capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • The employee must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and push or pull heavily loaded carts up to 200 pounds.
  • The employee must possess visual, hearing, and oral acuity, manual dexterity, and technical ability.
  • The employee must be able to wear lead for extended periods of time.
  • The employee must be able to follow strict sterile technique.
  • The employee must be able to set up an operating room with instruments and supplies for scheduled cases and pass them to and from the surgeon during procedures.
  • The employee must have knowledge of and adhere to strict aseptic and sterile techniques.
Responsibilities
  • Set up scheduled cases with the needed supplies and instrumentation.
  • Assist with safely transporting patients to the operating room and properly positioning them on the operating room table.
  • Confirm the correctness of the surgical site and procedure to be performed in accordance with national patient safety goals.
  • Perform surgical scrubbing and properly don sterile gloves and gowns; gown and glove surgeons and other personnel.
  • Assist with accounting for instruments, sharps, sponges, and other soft goods used during surgical procedures.
  • Identify, prepare, and correctly pass surgical instruments and sharps to and from the surgeon.
  • Assist with operating-room cleanup by transporting instruments, disposing of trash and linens, and restocking supplies.
  • Assist the surgeon or physician with endoscopic procedures, including patient positioning, gloving, cleaning and disinfecting endoscopes, and using personal protective equipment.
  • Assist with decontamination of surgical instrumentation.
  • Monitor the autoclave during sterilization of instrumentation.
  • Safeguard patient privacy and maintain confidentiality.
  • Stock the operating room.
  • Assist the registered nurse or physician as needed or directed.
  • Complete annual education related to specialty accreditation requirements through computer-based learning, training, in-services, and competency validation when required by the facility.
  • The position is scheduled Monday through Friday on a varied shift.
  • The employee may be exposed to communicable diseases.
