Responsibilities
  • Integrating the service into the organization’s primary functions
  • Coordinating and integrating interdepartmental and intradepartmental services
  • Developing and implementing policies and procedures that guide and support the provisions of services
  • Recommending a sufficient number of qualified and competent persons to provide care, including treatment; ensures that the unit remains within the budget
  • The determination of the qualifications and competence of department personnel who provide patient care services and who are not licensed independent practitioners
  • Continuously assessing and improving the performance of care and services provided
  • Maintaining quality control programs as appropriate
  • Orienting and providing in-service training and continuing education of all persons in the department
  • Recommending space and other resources needed by the department, and participating in the selection of sources for needed services not provided by the department or organization
  • Establishing yearly goals and objectives for assigned units, reviewing each on a quarterly basis
  • Conducting unit conferences to clarify goals and objectives and evaluating progress towards achieving them
  • Establishing par levels for all supplies needed on patient units, including maintaining communication with other departments; conducts periodic meetings with other departments to review and revise supply systems
  • Interviewing and recommending hiring potential patient care services employees
  • Identifying employee related problems; initiating and documenting appropriate performance management
  • Promoting positive customer service
  • Has authority to reprimand and to recommend termination of employee when appropriate
  • Assumes advisory role to the In-house Supervisor in identifying and resolving clinically related situations or problems
  • Together with appropriate charge nurse, completes written evaluation including initial, annual, and other performance reviews
  • Ensures that required records for all Patient Care Services personnel assigned to unit (copies of professional licensure, CPT certificates, etc.) are current and filed in Education and Human Resources
  • Is responsible for establishing and maintaining yearly budget for all units assigned to his/her responsibility
  • Interprets organization structure, policies, and procedures to staff, patients, visitors and other departmental personnel
  • Investigates unusual occurrences and determines action required to prevent further incidents
  • Established performance improvement program for assigned unit(s) in conjunction with Performance Improvement Committee
  • Acts as role model for shift managers, other Patient Care Services personnel, and student nurses on assigned units
  • Coordinates and/or participates in Performance Improvement Teams as necessary
  • Arranges and coordinates designated committee meetings according to hospital policy
  • Demonstrates knowledge of biopsychosocial aspects of human behavior ranging from infancy to geriatrics, according to scope of department
  • Ensures that the educational needs of all patients are met
  • Performs other duties as assigned
