Carmeuse partners with Holcim Romania on Eastern Europe's first large-scale carbon capture and storage project. March 30, 2026 BY Carmeuse Carmeuse, a key partner in the Carbon Hub CPT01 project, announced that Holcim Romania has signed a grant agreement with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency for a landmark carbon capture and storage initiative in Câmpulung, Argeș County. The project is the first Romanian initiative financed by the European Union Innovation Fund, one of the world's largest funding programs dedicated to deploying innovative low-carbon technologies. Carbon Hub CPT01 is set to become Eastern Europe's first large-scale onshore carbon capture and storage project, positioning Romania at the forefront of climate innovation and industrial decarbonization in the region. Once operational, it will enable the production of approximately 2 million tonnes of near-zero cement annually, supporting Holcim's NextGen Growth 2030 strategy and its roadmap toward net-zero building materials. Carmeuse expects to produce approximately 200,000 tonnes of near-zero lime annually, advancing its ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. At the core of the initiative is an innovative carbon capture system designed to process flue gases from two industrial emitters in the Câmpulung industrial area. By integrating carbon capture across both cement and lime production, the project contributes directly to decarbonizing the construction sector and strengthening Europe's sustainable construction value chain. "Projects like Carbon Hub CPT01 demonstrate that meaningful industrial decarbonization requires strong partnerships," said Ionel Ungureanu, area production manager at Carmeuse. "Together with Holcim and the broader consortium, we are contributing our expertise in lime production to build a robust carbon capture value chain that benefits industry, communities and the environment." "Signing this grant agreement with CINEA marks a defining milestone for our Carbon Hub CPT01 project and for the decarbonization of the construction sector in Eastern Europe," said Bogdan Dobre, CEO of Holcim Romania. "Through this initiative, we aim to demonstrate that large-scale carbon capture can accelerate the transition toward near-zero cement while supporting Romania's role in Europe's climate and industrial transformation." The Carbon Hub CPT01 project supports key European policy frameworks, including the European Clean Industrial Deal, the Net-Zero Industry Act and the EU's Industrial Carbon Management Strategy. March 18, 2026 The EPA has approved a permit for One Carbon Partnership to inject and store up to 13.5 million metric tons of CO[2] underground over 30 years at an ethanol facility in Randolph County, Indiana, with monitoring requirements extending 50 years post-injection to protect drinking water sources. January 22, 2026 Nikkiso CE&IG supported the commissioning of Deep Sky Alpha in Alberta, Canada's first operational facility to capture and permanently store atmospheric CO2 in sedimentary formations. The technology-agnostic DAC platform integrates multiple capture systems and is designed to remove up to 3,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, marking a significant step toward the commercialization and industrialization of scalable carbon removal technologies. January 20, 2026 Gevo has named Alex Clayton Chief Carbon Officer as part of its strategic realignment, aiming to expand its voluntary carbon market business. The company's North Dakota facility produces engineered carbon dioxide removal credits with thousand-year permanence, supporting both emissions reduction and new revenue opportunities. January 20, 2026 Denmark has awarded its first nearshore CO[2] storage exploration licence to TotalEnergies and Mitsui, with Nordsøfonden taking a 20% stake. The project expands Denmark's efforts to develop large-scale carbon storage and supports national climate goals. January 07, 2026 The Alaska Department of Natural Resources has launched a statewide CCUS information hub designed to support industry, researchers and the public with centralized geological, technical and regulatory data. The online platform consolidates decades of information to inform carbon capture, utilization and storage project development across Alaska. June 2-4, 2026 AMERICA'S CENTER | ST.
