Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or Business Management is required.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Ten to fifteen years of professional experience overall, including at least eight years of police and progressive management experience, is required.
  • Working knowledge of law enforcement and security methods, including compliance requirements for universities, is required.
  • Organizational, planning, interpersonal, and communication skills, the ability to motivate staff, and computer literacy are required.
  • The incumbent must be able to interact competently with culturally and ethnically diverse students, faculty, and staff.
  • Successful completion of a medical examination and drug testing is required.
  • Successful completion of a background check, possession and maintenance of a valid driver's license, and approval for university driving privileges are required.
  • The incumbent must qualify for a law enforcement commission in the District of Columbia.
Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and stewardship to the department across public safety programs and services.
  • Develop and implement public safety policies, specialized training, emergency management plans, law enforcement activities, physical security, parking enforcement and administration, campus shuttle leadership, traffic demand management, community safety and security training, and threat assessment.
  • Implement a continuous quality improvement initiative focused on systems and process improvement.
  • Ensure department functions operate consistently and ethically within the university's mission and values.
  • Oversee criminal investigations and special event planning.
  • Recruit, select, promote, train, instruct, and evaluate departmental personnel; authorize work schedules; and maintain accurate time reporting and personnel records.
  • Develop and direct the university emergency management program, including program design, policy development, communication, training, and emergency response protocols.
  • Lead the University's Emergency Response Team and define team member roles.
  • Act as liaison with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies for investigation, prosecution, and public-relations coordination.
  • Represent public safety on university and interuniversity task forces and project teams.
  • Prepare the annual public safety report covering goals, accomplishments, operations, and statistics.
  • Prepare and submit operational budgets, manage the approved budget, and report on progress and challenges.
  • Direct and manage public safety staff, budget, and emergency management activities.
  • Supervise police operations, Clery compliance, police communications, physical security, investigations, supervisors, police administration, and parking and traffic services.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree in Business Management is preferred.
