Requirements
  • A high school diploma is required.
  • For the Miners Campus, phlebotomy certification or successful completion of a phlebotomy program is preferred in addition to a high school diploma.
  • The role requires independent judgment in performing assigned duties.
  • The employee must be able to manipulate small vials and perform pipetting, operate laboratory equipment and computer systems, and occasionally lift boxes or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • The employee must have hearing, vision, and depth perception abilities appropriate for laboratory work.
Responsibilities
  • Register laboratory orders and patient information, including demographics, insurance information, and diagnoses, in the hospital information system.
  • Accession, label, aliquot, and transport blood and non-blood specimens to the appropriate testing areas or reference laboratories.
  • Operate centrifuges according to procedure.
  • Order laboratory supplies, maintain supply inventories, and handle chemical disposition safely as directed.
  • Perform requisition entry and ensure that registration processes are completed.
  • Troubleshoot registration issues and resolve work queue assignments.
  • Add Cytolyte to cytology specimens according to policy.
  • Follow computer downtime procedures when necessary.
  • Prepare referral specimens and complex molecular, oncology, and genomic send-outs for outside reference laboratories, including logging, packaging, mailing, and revenue-cycle documentation.
  • Review outstanding, exception, and add-on lists to ensure specimens are accessioned and transported appropriately.
  • Perform equipment maintenance, quality assurance measures, and equipment monitoring under supervision.
  • Assist pathologists with biopsies, bone marrow specimens, and other onsite attended procedures; make and stain slides, build cases in the computer, and package specimens for transport.
  • Handle irretrievable tissue specimens correctly for pre-analytic testing and process anatomic pathology specimens, including case building, grossing, cell-block creation, gynecologic triage, embedding, and basic microtomy under supervision.
  • Change pathology stain lines according to schedule and maintain current logs.
  • Perform phlebotomy and outpatient registration at the Miners Campus.
  • Perform moderate-complexity testing, including antigen testing, culture-plate processing and incubation, and basic equipment maintenance and quality checks under supervision.
  • Communicate with healthcare departments and outpatient clinical providers professionally.
  • Participate in training new employees, coordinate training, and precept new employees according to procedure.
  • Participate in educational programs, in-services, meetings, inspection and accreditation projects, and other assigned special duties.
