Requirements
  • A high school degree or equivalent is required.
  • A Certified Phlebotomy Technician Certificate issued by the state of Massachusetts is required.
  • Prior experience as a phlebotomist technician is required.
  • The employee must obtain adequate blood samples from patients with difficult-to-locate veins or patients who may be hostile or unstable.
  • The employee must discern when to request assistance in drawing blood.
  • The employee must maintain concentration amid noise, conversations, and foot traffic, consistently meet deadlines, and remain flexible in work hours to meet patient and organizational needs.
  • The employee must maintain self-control during volatile or hostile customer-service interactions.
  • The employee must have high-school-level reading and writing skills, acceptable oral and written communication skills, and legible handwriting.
  • The employee must have customer-service skills for courteous face-to-face interactions with patients, the public, and staff.
  • The employee must use appropriate social skills, demonstrate respect for patients and staff, and show empathy toward patients.
  • The employee must be able to work independently in a restricted physical environment for extended periods.

Responsibilities
  • The employee draws blood and collects other patient specimens using venipunctures and finger sticks.
  • The employee identifies the best method for retrieving samples, prepares specimens for laboratory testing, and performs screening procedures.
  • The employee supplies diagnostic notes to physicians, healthcare professionals, and hospitals.
  • The employee verifies patient identification and explains sampling procedures.
  • The employee maintains specimen integrity using aseptic technique, department procedures, and isolation procedures.
  • The employee analyzes blood specimens with the correct testing equipment when necessary.
  • The employee cleans, maintains, and calibrates laboratory equipment used for drawing and testing blood specimens.
  • The employee orders laboratory supplies as needed.
  • The employee conducts Q15 observations and 1:1 observations in accordance with hospital standards and ensures there are no gaps in observation coverage.
  • The employee takes direction from an RN or LVN and floats to any unit as needed.
  • The employee maintains boundaries with patients and employees.
  • The employee observes patients for behavioral changes, attempts de-escalation before a code, and notifies the RN to evaluate changes.
  • The employee responds to all codes and ensures observation coverage when leaving rounds or a 1:1 assignment.
  • The employee assists patients with hygiene and helps maintain unit cleanliness.
  • The employee follows the daily schedule and keeps patients on track for events.
  • The employee uses respectful communication with patients to avoid escalating situations.
  • The employee uses appropriate phone etiquette and addresses customer questions and concerns.
  • The employee conducts soft safety searches, including wanding and checking shoes and pockets, and informs the RN if contraband is found.
  • The employee assists the RN with taking vital signs when staffing permits continued Q15 and 1:1 coverage.
  • The employee inventories patient belongings and alerts the RN when medications are found.
  • The employee escorts patients when sent out for medical treatment or other services and escorts patients to meals and activities.
  • The employee supports patient safety and wellbeing and respects patient rights and dignity.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior psychiatric healthcare experience is helpful.
  • Skills in teaching or assisting with activities of daily living are helpful.
