Requirements
  • Subscription and Payment platforms support subscribers' lifecycle as a customer of our products. This includes subscription management, billing and delivery of newspapers to subscribers' homes. Help us grow to 10 million subscribers and beyond
  • Identity platforms make it easy for product teams across the Times to build user-facing experiences that depend on a user's identity and a user's access permissions
  • Content platforms are at the heart of The New York Times reader facing products. We invest in our platforms that are the foundation for our business, from accessing and distributing the content we deliver to the actual experience of building web and mobile products at The New York Times
  • Messaging platforms support the delivery of push and email notifications to our users - from breaking news alerts to subscriber-only editorial newsletters
  • Designing and operating distributed systems at scale
  • Developing organizational technical strategy and communicating it to various audiences
  • Building highly scalable, performant and fault-tolerant distributed systems
  • At least one modern programming language
  • Designing and implementing scalable CRUD operation patterns for persistent data storage
  • Developing gRPC/GraphQL/REST APIs with versioning strategy
  • Formulating data models and schemas (Protobuf/JSON/SQL)
  • Cloud-based (AWS/GCP) architecture and technologies at scale
  • Container orchestration technologies (Kubernetes)
  • Troubleshooting complex systems using tools such as DataDog, SumoLogic, Stackdriver or similar
  • Authentication / authorization protocols and frameworks such as OAuth, OIDC, SSO, JWT, SAML, Session Management a bonus
Responsibilities
  • Translate broad business goals into practical technical solutions with realistic milestones
  • Organize and guide balanced decisions across your peers for architecture, design, and implementation details
  • Gather support on your technical strategy through collaborative discussions with adjacent teams and other partners
  • Create strategies for delivering new capabilities while paying down technical debt and investing in engineering excellence
  • Advise engineering management and product management on assessing technical complexity and resourcing needs
  • Support engineers in your team in developing architecture, design, development, testing, delivery and operations systems and solutions
  • Mentor engineers to level up the group's abilities
