Requirements
  • A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of experience in performance engineering, performance testing, or Java development in high-volume, low-latency, transactional systems.
  • Deep expertise in Java Virtual Machine internals, including heap dump analysis, thread dump analysis, garbage collection log interpretation, and memory profiling.
  • Proficiency with Java and scripting languages such as Python, Groovy, or Linux shell for building test harness foundations and automation.
  • Ability to perform scalability analysis by projecting system behavior as data volumes grow and validating linearity assumptions with empirical evidence.
  • Ability to perform critical path analysis, identify time-constrained operations, separate them from non-critical work, and validate architectural changes that improve throughput within a fixed time window.
  • Hands-on experience designing and operating multi-signal observability stacks covering metrics collection, distributed tracing, and continuous profiling across Java application environments.
  • Proficiency with Prometheus and VictoriaMetrics for metrics collection, storage, querying, health scoring rules, recording rules, and alerting.
  • Experience building custom metrics exporters to expose business-layer and application-specific signals.
  • Proficiency with Grafana for operational and performance dashboards, including programmatic dashboard management, datasource governance, and multi-team dashboard standards.
  • Familiarity with distributed tracing and continuous profiling tools, and ability to use trace and profile data with load-test results for root-cause analysis.
  • Experience building automated post-test reporting pipelines that synthesize observability data and load-test results into actionable performance narratives.
  • Experience with event-driven, message-based architectures such as Kafka and IBM MQ, including testing and profiling throughput and latency across event pipelines.
  • Experience with load-generation frameworks such as JMeter, Gatling, or custom harnesses, and ability to design workloads representative of production traffic patterns.
  • Ability to communicate findings clearly to technical architects and non-technical stakeholders and collaborate with application owners.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with AI coding and analysis tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, and Cursor for generating profiling scripts, writing Prometheus queries, analyzing garbage collection logs, and building test-harness scaffolding.
Responsibilities
  • Define and own the performance engineering strategy across multiple critical platforms, including standards for testing approaches, tooling, and reporting.
  • Lead deep-dive performance investigations on CPU-bound, multithreaded Java systems at the Java Virtual Machine, operating system, and hardware levels.
  • Drive scalability analysis and produce capacity projections to guide architecture decisions.
  • Lead critical path segregation analysis, propose architectural solutions such as head-start strategies and out-of-band processing, and validate their impact.
  • Design and own a comprehensive observability framework spanning metrics, distributed tracing, and continuous profiling.
  • Build and maintain platform-wide health scoring and alerting using Prometheus and VictoriaMetrics, and drive consistent instrumentation and Grafana visualization standards.
  • Develop custom metrics exporters for business-layer signals, including database growth, queue depths, and pipeline latency.
  • Architect and maintain Grafana dashboard ecosystems and establish standards for dashboard organization, datasource governance, and operational visibility.
  • Lead distributed tracing and continuous profiling initiatives across Java application estates and use trace and profile data to complement load-test findings.
  • Build automated post-test analysis pipelines that correlate load-test results with observability data to produce causal performance narratives.
  • Design and build test harnesses that measure version-to-version performance regressions for compute-intensive components.
  • Tune Java Virtual Machine thread pools, garbage collection, and heap allocation for high-throughput, latency-sensitive processing pipelines.
  • Design representative workloads using JMeter, Gatling, or custom load-generation harnesses.
  • Create and maintain automation scripts and tooling for repeatable performance analysis tasks.
  • Act as a technical liaison between performance, development, infrastructure, and operations teams, translating findings into data-backed recommendations.
  • Champion AI-augmented workflows for root-cause analysis, test-harness development, and anomaly detection, while establishing standards for validating AI-generated output before production use.

What believers are saying

  • Q1 2026 net revenues hit $3.0 billion, up 20% year over year.
  • August 2026 futures open interest reached 16.8 million lots, with 14% ADV growth.
  • ICE Digital Trust and tokenization moves target crypto custody and collateral workflows.

What critics are saying

  • MarketAxess closing in first-half 2027 needs regulators; antitrust scrutiny can delay synergies.
  • Mortgage Technology produced a Q1 2026 operating loss, exposing ICE to rate-cycle weakness.
  • Perpetual-futures rule changes and AI data commoditization threaten exchange and market-data economics.

What makes Intercontinental Exchange unique

  • NYSE, Brent, and ICE Futures franchises create unmatched regulated market-infrastructure scale.
  • ICE controls proprietary fixed-income pricing data and clearing, shielding margins from pure-exchange rivals.

NYSE parent ICE invests in tZERO, licenses 103 blockchain patents for tokenised securities platform

Intercontinental Exchange, parent of the New York Stock Exchange, has signed agreements with tZERO to build infrastructure for a tokenised securities platform. tZERO will serve as design partner for digital transfer-agent and broker-dealer systems supporting on-chain settlement. ICE will invest in tZERO's latest funding round and license its blockchain patent portfolio, which spans 23 patent families and 103 patents covering token lifecycles, compliance-aware transfer logic, and smart contract frameworks. tZERO is expected to seek approval as a digital transfer agent on ICE's NYSE-affiliated Digital Trading Platform. The companies will also evaluate using tZERO's tokenised assets for collateral management across ICE's clearing houses. The partnership marks tZERO's deepest tie to a major exchange operator. No timeline for regulatory approval or platform launch was disclosed.

Entrepreneur bought near-bankrupt firm from Buffett for $1,000, built it into $85B giant

Jeffrey Sprecher, founder and CEO of Intercontinental Exchange, purchased a failing company from Warren Buffett's MidAmerican Energy for $1,000 in 1997, despite Buffett having invested $35 million in it. Sprecher, who had no Wall Street experience, used it to build what would become Intercontinental Exchange. Starting in 2000 with nine employees in Atlanta, Sprecher lived in a 500-square-foot studio flat and drove a used car whilst building the business. He handled menial tasks like taking out rubbish and answering phones. Today, Intercontinental Exchange has a market capitalisation of $85 billion and employs over 12,000 people. The company has owned the New York Stock Exchange for more than a decade. Sprecher's net worth now stands at $1.2 billion.
