Requirements
  • A master's degree or higher in Teaching American Sign Language as a Foreign/Second Language, Education, Linguistics, Deaf Studies, Interpreting, or a closely related field.
  • Native or near-native fluency in American Sign Language.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of American Sign Language linguistics and the use of American Sign Language in language instruction.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and Deaf history.
  • Broad experience and engagement within the Deaf community.
  • Sensitivity to issues affecting the Deaf community.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to work effectively as a collaborative member of a team.
  • The successful candidate must be able to teach classes in person on the Columbus campus.
Responsibilities
  • Teach four in-person courses each semester on the Columbus campus.
  • Support student success through effective instruction, course preparation, assessment, and academic engagement.
  • Develop syllabi and instructional materials.
  • Hold regular office hours.
  • Evaluate student work.
  • Submit grades by established deadlines.
  • Communicate with students.
  • Attend faculty meetings and collaborate with colleagues to support program goals and student learning.
  • Plan and organize instruction to maximize student learning.
  • Ensure curriculum implementation and course preparation align with department standards.
  • Prepare, evaluate, and return homework, exams, and other student work in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grades in accordance with established university deadlines.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of student information in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
  • Attend faculty meetings and collaborate with colleagues.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language pedagogy and effective language teaching practices.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, preferably at the college or university level.
  • Experience teaching advanced American Sign Language courses, such as American Sign Language Linguistics, American Sign Language Literature, Deaf Culture, Deaf History, Deaf Studies, and Deaf Education.
  • Experience teaching introductory American Sign Language courses, including American Sign Language I, American Sign Language II, and American Sign Language III, with content areas such as American Sign Language Grammar and Classifiers.
  • Experience using Canvas Learning Management System or a comparable learning management platform.
