  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • For Trauma only, a Medical Assisting Certificate is required.
  • For Trauma only, working knowledge of ICD-9 and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding is required, with emphasis on the applicable specialty.
  • Strong medical terminology knowledge is required.
  • Ability to use word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and other job-relevant software is required.
  • The position requires effective oral, face-to-face, telephone, and written communication and positive customer-relations skills.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate effective problem-solving is required.
Responsibilities
  • Complete surgery scheduling for patients of physicians in the practice, including coordinating with the surgery department and allocating appropriate block time.
  • Obtain insurance authorizations and necessary documents or testing for surgical cases.
  • Coordinate surgery scheduling with other physicians and communicate surgery dates and times to patients and physicians.
  • Schedule complex oncology appointments, including laboratory appointments, physician or advanced practice provider visits, chemotherapy, injections, therapeutic phlebotomies, and diagnostic procedures.
  • Adjust patient and provider schedules as needed and maintain accurate and safe schedules for the Cancer Center infusion room.
  • Manage radiation and gynecology oncology treatment schedules for patients from outside referrals.
  • Work with providers, nursing staff, and other care-team members to schedule accurate and safe patient treatments.
  • Communicate appointment updates to patients, handle appointment-related phone calls, and confirm treatment authorization before scheduling treatment appointments.
  • Review work queues and/or post charges into the Practice Management System for provider hospital and office billing and simple surgical cases; validate dates of service and appropriate billing codes.
  • Run reports such as Charge Summary reports for physician review and the Central Business Office.
  • Maintain spreadsheets tracking authorizations and surgical cases or procedures.
  • Relay messages to providers, answer telephones, manage internal and external correspondence, and complete required forms or letters.
  • For Trauma only, assist with meeting scheduling and documentation of minutes, depositions, and representative visits; schedule patient appointments; assist with Family and Medical Leave Act paperwork, prescription refills, and follow-up care; and manage call calendars within practice and Bronson call systems.
Desired Qualifications
  • Six to twelve months of coding experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification is preferred.
