Requirements
  • Five years in physician and hospital coding
  • Two years of coding audit experience at LCMC
  • Associate's Degree in Health Information Management
  • Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) certification issued by American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT/HCPCS, MS-DRG, APR-DRG and APC coding principles and guidelines
  • Knowledge of Prospective Payment System methodology for inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory and provider-based clinic encounters
  • Extensive knowledge of hospital and professional coding including provider-based billing
  • Knowledge of documentation regulations of Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
  • Experience with concurrent coding reviews
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, classification systems and vocabularies
  • Knowledge of privacy and security regulations, confidentiality, and access and release of information practices
  • Experience in assisting and identifying learning needs and providing education and training to support a learning organization
  • Strong analytical abilities and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to organize and set priorities to ensure objectives are met in a timely manner
  • Ability to adapt to change and handle challenges proactively and with poise
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with physicians and managerial staff at all levels
Responsibilities
  • Review cases for accurate coding and monitor the assignment and sequencing of ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT codes to ensure correct diagnostic and procedure coding
  • Sequence diagnoses and procedures accurately according to coding principles
  • Review non-Complete/Correct codes (non-CC/MCC records) to determine if the record was miscoded or if additional documentation is needed
  • Work coding edits work queues and provide feedback and coding education to coding staff regarding completeness and accuracy of code assignment
  • Utilize retrospective edit tools to address possible coding and/or documentation issues related to submitted diagnosis and procedure information obtained from the health record
  • Review discrepancies between Clinical Documentation Specialist DRG and the Coder DRG
  • Perform reviews in a timely manner to maintain Discharge Not Final Billed (DNFB) within assigned targeted goals
  • Assist in the development and provide ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT/HCPCS, DRG (MS and All Patient Refined) and APC auditing, coding and reimbursement training
  • Monitor and report coders progress through orientation and training processes
  • Establish timelines for training completion specific to level of training necessary
  • Keep abreast of new regulatory requirements and annual revisions to codes and apply information appropriately
  • Serve as subject matter expert and provide expertise when applicable
  • Conduct and report research on topics related to health information management, coding, billing and related compliance issues
  • Ensure audit findings and trends are investigated and education is prepared and reviewed with coding staff when necessary
  • Monitor changes in laws, regulations, standards affecting coding, billing and related compliance
  • Read, analyze, and interpret laws, regulations, policies and procedures governing the healthcare revenue cycle
  • Identify potential areas of compliance vulnerability and risk; develop potential corrective action plans and provide guidance to avoid future issues
  • Prepare and distribute audit results/reports for the system coding program to Coding management staff
  • Work with the coding Manager to improve coding services provided by coding staff
  • Assist system coding leadership with training and development of a performance improvement track for coding staff in disciplinary processes related to quality or productivity performance
  • Perform special coding-related projects as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

ARPA-H to fund behavioral health projects through new initiative. The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health announced Nov. 21 that it will fund up to $100 million in projects for quantitative measures of mental and behavioral health through its new Evidence-Based Validation & Innovation for Rapid Therapeutics in Behavioral Health initiative.
