Requirements
  • Completion of a two-year diploma in Therapeutic Recreation or an Interdisciplinary Therapy Assistant program, or an equivalent qualification, is required.
  • A valid First Aid/CPR certification is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal English language skills are required, with the ability to communicate with and understand the changing needs of Residents living in long-term care.
  • The ability to make decisions and be accountable for those decisions is required.
  • The ability to prioritize and organize workload is required.
  • Team-building skills are required.
  • The ability to facilitate resolution of problems and conflicts is required.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare, implement, and evaluate recreation programs and maintain Resident attendance records for those programs.
  • Ensure every Resident is involved in identified recreational activities to meet the goals of the Resident's recreational treatment plan.
  • Lead, instruct, and motivate Residents in individual and group leisure pursuits.
  • Record complete, accurate, and relevant data for every Resident according to Park Place charting protocol.
  • Complete documentation in Residents' charts as directed by the Recreation Therapist.
  • Complete MDA RAI assessments and care planning when directed by the Recreation Therapist.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with interdisciplinary team members and work collaboratively with the Interdisciplinary Team, including volunteers, to support Residents' wishes and needs.
  • Accompany Residents to off-site programs with other employees and/or family members or substitute decision-makers to ensure safety.
  • Perform assigned Medication Assistance activities, including documentation, under the direction of a regulated health care provider and in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and provincial standards.
  • Participate in required training and education programs, including Medication Assistance Program certification and annual competency evaluation, before performing assigned medication-assistance duties.
  • Attend relevant education sessions.
  • Assist with Park Place Quality Assurance program audits and evaluations to determine the results and effectiveness of current programs.
  • Take reasonable precautions to protect the safety of Residents, visitors, employees, volunteers, and the general public.
  • Report near misses, injuries, equipment damage, and accidents to the supervisor immediately and complete required reports.
  • Report unsafe work conditions and unsafe acts.
  • Make safety suggestions.
  • Read, understand, and comply with Park Place and provincially mandated Occupational Health and Safety policies and safe work practices.
  • Use safe work procedures, promote health and safety policy awareness, read posted Occupational Health and Safety minutes, and correct or report unsafe conditions.
  • Set a good example.

  • Organization, dependability, and flexibility are preferred.
  • Strong communication with Residents, families, employees, volunteers, and visitors is preferred.
