- A high school diploma or GED is required, with documentation provided.
- Previous phlebotomy and medical laboratory experience is required.
- Ability to multitask and organize large volumes of work accurately.
- Problem-solving skills.
- Ability to independently research questions and communicate facts and ideas to other laboratories and clinic personnel.
- Ability to handle heavy workloads, competing demands, and stress.
- Ability to stand for 90% of an eight-hour workday.
- Ability to lift occasional loads of up to 20 pounds.
- Ability to use a microscope and identify crystals and cellular structures while correlating biochemical results with microscopy.
- Ability to set up cultures, maintain specimen identity accurately, and organize microbiology work.
- Receive specimens and ensure all samples are present for requested testing.
- Aliquot specimens when needed and sort or send specimens to the appropriate department.
- Process requests for add-on testing.
- Handle Airborne and Federal Express mailings.
- Send reportable test levels to the State Public Health Department.
- Assist with bone marrow procedures by collecting supplies, reagents, and paperwork; making smears; determining tubes or media for special testing; and assisting the physician as needed.
- Perform urine microscopy.
- Set up and process microbiology and culture specimens as assigned.
- Post patient charges into the billing program, review invoices, request credits when necessary, and assist the inventory clerk and Laboratory Information System Coordinator as needed.
- Answer phones and contact patients or physician offices.
- Comply with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.
- Adhere to Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Springfield Clinic training and accomplishment requirements.
- Provide customer service in accordance with the Springfield Clinic customer service philosophy.
- Perform other assigned job duties.
