Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required, with documentation provided.
  • Previous phlebotomy and medical laboratory experience is required.
  • Ability to multitask and organize large volumes of work accurately.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to independently research questions and communicate facts and ideas to other laboratories and clinic personnel.
  • Ability to handle heavy workloads, competing demands, and stress.
  • Ability to stand for 90% of an eight-hour workday.
  • Ability to lift occasional loads of up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to use a microscope and identify crystals and cellular structures while correlating biochemical results with microscopy.
  • Ability to set up cultures, maintain specimen identity accurately, and organize microbiology work.
Responsibilities
  • Receive specimens and ensure all samples are present for requested testing.
  • Aliquot specimens when needed and sort or send specimens to the appropriate department.
  • Process requests for add-on testing.
  • Handle Airborne and Federal Express mailings.
  • Send reportable test levels to the State Public Health Department.
  • Assist with bone marrow procedures by collecting supplies, reagents, and paperwork; making smears; determining tubes or media for special testing; and assisting the physician as needed.
  • Perform urine microscopy.
  • Set up and process microbiology and culture specimens as assigned.
  • Post patient charges into the billing program, review invoices, request credits when necessary, and assist the inventory clerk and Laboratory Information System Coordinator as needed.
  • Answer phones and contact patients or physician offices.
  • Comply with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.
  • Adhere to Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Springfield Clinic training and accomplishment requirements.
  • Provide customer service in accordance with the Springfield Clinic customer service philosophy.
  • Perform other assigned job duties.
