Mayor daniel lurie breaks ground on transformation of Chinatown's historic Portsmouth Square. $73 million investment, community-led project will upgrade Chinatown's "living room" With new community clubhouse, play areas, and event space; continues mayor lurie's work under family opportunity agenda to provide vibrant, welcome public spaces for families. San Francisco has broken ground on the transformation of Portsmouth Square, a historic public space in Chinatown supported by a $73 million investment to revitalize the neighborhood's "living room." Swinerton is the contractor on the project, partnering with SWA as landscape architect and MEI Architects as project architect. The project reflects years of community input and will modernize the space while preserving its historical significance. Portsmouth Square has served as a central gathering place since the early days of San Francisco. The redevelopment will include a new 8,300-square-foot community clubhouse with meeting rooms and a commercial kitchen, expanded play areas, a larger playground, and a new adult fitness area. It will also feature a flexible outdoor plaza and stage for events, along with improvements to accessibility, seating, landscaping, lighting, and public art. Swinerton Builders and Dick Clark + Associates have completed Workbench, a four-storey mass timber office and retail development at 2422 East Seventh Street in East Austin. Nearly two-thirds of the building's owners and tenants are women-owned or women-led businesses. The mass timber structure stores approximately 500 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide, equivalent to removing 301 cars from the road for one year. Sustainable features include natural lighting, shaded windows, outdoor patios on every level, a roof deck, electric vehicle charging stations and energy-efficient lighting controls. The building houses local architecture, engineering, construction and property firms, including developers Dick Clark + Associates, Swinerton, Legacy Lighting, Beck-Reit Commercial, Fort Structures and Art + Artisans. The ground floor includes Legacy Lighting's showroom and a 6,000-square-foot restaurant space available for lease.
Swinerton selected for landmark Fire Department training facility in San Francisco. Apr 28, 2026, 11:55 ET New SFFD Division of Training campus will simulate real earthquake and urban emergency conditions to strengthen Bay Area preparedness. SAN FRANCISCO, April 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Swinerton Builders (Swinerton), California's premier builder, has been selected as the Construction Manager/General Contractor for the new $145 million San Francisco Fire Department Division of Training (SFFD DOT) facility - a transformative investment in public safety and emergency response readiness for the Bay Area. This is a contract with San Francisco Public Works on behalf of the SFFD. Strategically located in the city's southeastern district, this state-of-the-art campus will become the new home for SFFD's training operations, offering realistic, scenario-based environments for both recruits and veteran firefighters. The facility includes a 50,000-square-foot scenario district, which is designed to mirror a city block's unique characteristics within San Francisco neighborhoods. The district incorporates sloped intersections, narrow hallways and staircases with limited maneuvering space. Some structures will appear partially collapsed, simulating the aftermath of an earthquake. Other training elements include a multi-story burn building, specialized training towers that represent common structures in San Francisco and advanced classroom spaces. "This training center will ensure San Francisco's first responders have the tools, resources, and space they need to train safely and effectively," said Paul Hinz, vice president and division manager, Swinerton's San Francisco/East Bay division. The Administration/Classroom Building will be constructed as an Essential Services Building, designed for immediate occupancy following a major earthquake, serving as a backup emergency operations center. The SFFD DOT facility officially broke ground on April 16 on the eight-acre site in the Hunters Point/Bayview neighborhood, replacing the outdated training facilities at 19th and Folsom Streets, built in the 1950s, and Treasure Island, which the Fire Department acquired from the U.S. Navy in 1997.
