- Graduate of an approved school of nursing.
- Maintains a current State of Alabama Registered Nurse license or valid enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact multistate Registered Nurse license.
- Maintains current Basic Life Support/Healthcare Provider certification.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Trauma Nursing Core Course certifications are required for certain areas; Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification is required for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
- One year of experience is required unless approved by an Assistant Vice President level or above.
- Provides nursing care for patients in the post-anesthesia care unit who require timely, intense, and complex care to stabilize and support their medical condition.
- Uses critical knowledge, skills, and judgment to care for patients requiring complex assessment and therapies, high-intensity interventions, and continuous nursing vigilance.
- Uses assessment data to anticipate and respond to rapidly changing patient conditions.
- Identifies and prioritizes information to take immediate, decisive, evidence-based, patient-focused action.
- Monitors and adjusts specialized patient equipment and interprets and records electronic displays, including intracranial pressures, central venous pressures, pulmonary artery pressures, cardiac rhythms, respirators, ventilators, and oxygen pumps.
- Responds to life-saving situations according to nursing standards and protocols.
- Observes, monitors, and assesses patient conditions; recognizes serious situations and calls physicians or takes preplanned emergency measures when physicians are unavailable.
- Assesses patient needs, develops or revises individualized plans of care, and evaluates progress toward expected outcomes.
- Advocates for patients and families.
- Provides age-appropriate patient care using advanced nursing knowledge and skills.
- Serves as a preceptor, charge nurse, unit educator, or nurse clinician.
- Communicates and collaborates with medical staff and interdisciplinary teams to plan and manage the unit or department.
- Coordinates care and delegates appropriately to other team members for an assigned group of patients.
- Documents patient assessment, education, medication administration, treatments, and patient safety activities in accordance with regulatory standards.
- Demonstrates competency in nursing skills and use of patient-care and unit equipment.
- Prioritizes patient care according to evidence-based standards of care.
- Identifies and resolves problems effectively.
- Delegates tasks and duties to healthcare team members according to patient needs and team-member capabilities and qualifications.
- Communicates patient-condition and unit-concern information to healthcare team members.
- Provides a compassionate and therapeutic environment for patients and families.
- Maintains awareness of legal issues and patient rights.
- Previous experience in a post-anesthesia care unit, intensive care unit, or emergency room is strongly preferred.
