Requirements

  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy
  • Ability to travel extensively to field sites for several multi-week trips throughout the year
  • Ability to hike long distances while carrying equipment
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct greenhouse experiments to quantify functional traits of plants including the following tasks: prepare rhizoboxes for planting, organize the stratification of seeds for sowing, monitor plants 5 times per week to ensure growth and survival, measure rooting depth and plant height, clean rhizoboxes for future deployment, repair rhizoboxes, design more efficient protocols and test methods to ensure replicability, design protocols for measuring resprouting potential, order new greenhouse supplies as needed.
  • Lead field work campaigns to measure the functional traits of plants including the following tasks: organize gear for research trips, correspond with research partners to plan for trips, drive to research sites across all western USA states, camp in the field or stay in research quarters, measure traits, sample leaves, wood, and branches, quantify traits on analytical balance and store samples for long term, order field equipment as needed.
  • Conduct laboratory experiments to quantify functional traits of plants including the following tasks: monitor plants in drying ovens, organize lab supplies and order new supplies as needed, monitor plant samples in refrigerators and freezers, measure osmotic potential of leaves for turgor loss point experiments, scan leaves and roots on scanner and use software to analyze leaf area and root length measurements, measure seed mass.
  • Supervise and mentor student hourly workers, attend weekly lab meetings to report on weekly updates, provide feedback on protocols and suggest improvements, and train graduate students in the protocols for the greenhouse, field, and laboratory.
  • Develop code to process and analyze data from experiments, organize data for long term storage and publication.
