3M's fiber-optic tech for AI data centres could grow fivefold as Microsoft certifies expanded beam connectivity

3M, the company known for Post-it notes and Scotch tape, has developed expanded beam optical connectivity technology that helps data centre operators deploy fibre-optic networks faster for AI workloads. The technology saves 85% of installation time by spreading light across a wider surface, making connections more resistant to dust and vibrations. Microsoft has certified the technology for use in its Azure data centres after several years of testing. 3M is conducting trials with other hyperscalers whilst expanding manufacturing capacity. The business is expected to generate $40 million to $50 million in revenue this year but could grow four to five times over the next several years. 3M plans to double production capacity this year and again over the following 12 to 18 months.

3M's $3,120 annual dividend: 1,000 shares yield 1.94% after Aristocrat reset

3M stock generates $3,120 in annual passive income from 1,000 shares at the current quarterly dividend of $0.78, representing roughly a 2% yield. The company's Dividend Aristocrat streak ended in 2024 following the Solventum spin-off, which reset the quarterly dividend from $1.51 to $0.70. However, 3M has since raised its dividend twice consecutively, climbing to the current $0.78 rate. The payout appears sustainable with a ratio under 40% of guided 2026 earnings. CEO William Brown projects adjusted earnings per share of $8.50 to $8.70 for 2026 against the $3.12 annual dividend. The company reported first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $2.14 per share on $6.03 billion in revenue. 3M returned $2.41 billion to shareholders in the first quarter of 2026 through dividends and buybacks. Institutional ownership stands at 77.5% of the float. Ongoing litigation remains a concern, including PFAS-related lawsuits that prompted the original dividend reset.

3M partners with Microsoft to deploy optical tech in Azure data centers and accelerate AI transformation

3M and Microsoft have announced a strategic partnership focused on AI data centre infrastructure and enterprise transformation. Microsoft's Azure Cloud and AI Infrastructure will become the first announced hyperscale cloud provider to deploy 3M's Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) technology in its data centres. The EBO technology uses an expanded beam optical interface rather than direct contact, making fibre connections faster to install, more tolerant of contamination, and easier to maintain. Microsoft's early testing has shown potential to reduce network deployment timelines whilst demonstrating strong signal performance in live data centre conditions. 3M will deploy Microsoft's AI and digital capabilities across customer service, finance, sales, and marketing functions. The partnership includes collaboration on AI agent-driven workflows to automate customer order management, aiming to reduce manual effort and improve process efficiency.
