United Therapeutics reports $333M net income and $7.27 EPS as ralinepag files for FDA approval

United Therapeutics reported second-quarter 2026 results showing sales of $783.3 million, a slight year-on-year decline, whilst net income rose to $333 million and diluted earnings per share increased to $7.27. The company continued share repurchases under its $1.50 billion buyback programme, retiring 5.84% of shares. The biotech firm also published positive phase 3 ADVANCE OUTCOMES data for investigational pulmonary arterial hypertension therapy ralinepag and filed with the FDA. The stronger earnings per share partly reflects the shrinking share count from buybacks. Analysts remain divided on the company's future, with some projecting only 1.2% annual revenue growth and $1.4 billion earnings by 2029, citing concerns about its concentrated portfolio of pulmonary drugs and regulatory uncertainties.

United Therapeutics appoints ex-National Academy of Medicine president Victor Dzau to board

United Therapeutics Corporation has appointed Victor Dzau to its board of directors, effective 22 July 2026. Dr Dzau recently completed a 12-year term as president of the National Academy of Medicine and previously served as chancellor for health affairs at Duke University and president of the Duke University Health System. Dr Dzau is recognised globally as a physician-scientist whose research laid the foundation for ACE inhibitors. He pioneered gene therapy for vascular disease and currently studies cardiac regeneration. Martine Rothblatt, chairperson and chief executive officer of United Therapeutics, said Dr Dzau is uniquely capable of guiding the company in its mission of developing transplantable organs and organ alternatives for patients with end-stage organ failure.

United Therapeutics wins FDA approval for LungFX device amid questions over valuation

United Therapeutics is under scrutiny after the US FDA approved its LungFX device for centralised ex vivo lung perfusion. The stock has shown strong momentum, with a year-to-date return of 10.13% and a one-year total shareholder return of 85.12%, though short-term prices have eased slightly. The company closed at $547.06, against a narrative fair value of $665.23, suggesting an 18% undervaluation. The valuation gap depends on whether LungFX, Tyvaso, and the broader pulmonary and organ platforms can drive future earnings. United Therapeutics' pipeline includes studies in progressive fibrosis, next-generation delivery platforms, and organ manufacturing technologies. However, the company faces risks from potential trial setbacks and drug pricing reforms that could impact profitability and cash flows.

The company focuses on treating life-threatening diseases, including pulmonary arterial hypertension, whilst addressing the global organ shortage through xenotransplantation, 3D bioprinting, and ex vivo lung perfusion technologies. Separately, the FDA granted premarket approval for LungFX, which Leerink Partners described as a regulatory advancement supporting the company's long-term organ manufacturing strategy. Leerink maintains an Outperform rating on United Therapeutics shares.

United Therapeutics expands regenerative medicine pipeline with $140M Thymmune acquisition.

United Therapeutics expands regenerative medicine pipeline with $140M Thymmune acquisition. July 2, 2026 United Therapeutics has acquired Thymmune Therapeutics, a privately held, preclinical biotechnology company developing regenerative thymic cell therapies, in a deal valued at $140 million upfront with the potential for an additional $160 million in milestone payments. Silver Spring, Maryland-based United Therapeutics (Nasdaq: UTHR) said the acquisition strengthens its regenerative medicine portfolio and supports its long-term strategy to expand the availability of transplantable organs while advancing cell-based therapies for immune-related diseases. Thymmune, based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, is developing scalable thymic cell therapies using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Its proprietary platform is designed to generate thymic cells capable of restoring healthy T-cell function, with potential applications in organ transplant tolerance, immunodeficiencies and autoimmune diseases. The company's lead candidate, THY-100, is in preclinical development for congenital athymia, a rare and life-threatening disorder in which infants are born without a functional thymus. According to the company, preclinical animal studies have demonstrated the formation of a functional "neo-thymus" capable of supporting T-cell development. United Therapeutics said the technology also has broader potential in transplant tolerance, immune-mediated diseases and age-related declines in immune function. "Thymmune's platform complements United Therapeutics' broader mission to expand the supply of transplantable organs, building on our UThymoKidney clinical development program and our growing strength in immunomodulatory therapeutics," said Martine Rothblatt, Ph.D., chairperson and chief executive officer of United Therapeutics. "By restoring or modulating T-cell receptor diversity, Thymmune's technology could make fundamental contributions to human health care and potentially resolve the root causes of dozens of life-threatening diseases." Thymmune founder and CEO Stan Wang, M.D., Ph.D., said United Therapeutics' expertise in organ alternatives and regenerative medicine makes it well-positioned to advance the company's platform toward clinical development. Under the terms of the agreement, United Therapeutics paid $140 million in cash, subject to customary post-closing adjustments. Former Thymmune shareholders may also receive up to $160 million in additional earn-out payments tied to the achievement of specified clinical and regulatory milestones through the end of 2031. Founded in 1996 by Martine Rothblatt after her daughter was diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension, United Therapeutics has grown from a rare disease drug developer into a diversified biotechnology company focused on pulmonary hypertension therapies, organ manufacturing, xenotransplantation and regenerative medicine. The company has invested heavily in developing manufactured organs and cell-based technologies aimed at addressing the shortage of transplantable organs. The acquisition comes as United Therapeutics continues to post strong financial results. For the first quarter of 2026, the company reported revenue of approximately $794 million, up from $677 million in the same period a year earlier, driven by continued growth across its pulmonary hypertension franchise. Net income totaled approximately $381 million for the quarter, and the company ended the period with more than $3 billion in cash and investments, providing substantial resources to fund acquisitions and advance its expanding research pipeline.
