Chinese auto brands are building factories and jv's across Europe. August 16, 2026 Chinese auto manufacturers are accelerating investment across Europe through new factories, production partnerships and acquisitions as regulatory changes drive localisation. Drive Safe and Fast has already seen this in Malaysia and ASEAN nations and it is now happening at an accelerated rate in Europe. Chinese auto manufacturers are just months away from transforming Europe's vehicle manufacturing sector. Collectively, they are building new factories, taking over unwanted and loss making current factories from legacy car manufacturers, using spare capacity in some legacy car factories and will do more of each of these in the coming years. There are many drivers behind this move but changing EU policy, notably the supplementary tariffs on Chinese-made EVs announced in late 2024, and now by the incoming Industry Accelerator Act (IAA). Together these are encouraging Chinese companies to accelerate plans to make vehicles in the EU and, potentially, the UK as well. For now, Turkey, which had been expected to be a recipient of Chinese investment, appears to have lost out: BYD has cancelled plans to build a factory there, much to the annoyance of the Turkish authorities. Why Europe's local content push may also fall short The importance of the auto sector, as a major employer, a key driver of R&D, a significant investor, and an important contributor to the EU's trade surplus, helps explain why the European Commission launched a major case against Chinese EV brands recently. Yet two years later, the view is that these traditional trade tools have been ineffective and highly motivated. The Commission has therefore shifted toward more protectionist and broader industrial policy response. The Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA) proposal published in March 2026 under the leadership of EU Commissioner Stéphane Séjourné, is proposing local content measures for a range of sectors including autos. The idea is to tie public financial support for vehicle purchases to "Made in Europe" (MiEU) criteria. Certain "trusted partners," such as the US, UK, Korea, or Japan, would be included for parts of this framework. China, however, would clearly fall outside it. Beyond putting Chinese-made vehicles at a disadvantage in Europe, the local content approach is also intended to address a second concern: the growing use of Chinese components in European vehicle production. As Europe transitions to electric vehicles and struggles to build a competitive battery industry, European carmakers are increasingly sourcing inputs from China. This includes not only batteries and powertrains but also a wide range of lower-value components. Renault, for example, plans to produce its new E-Twingo in Slovenia using a Chinese battery and powertrain, and likely additional electronics sourced from China. Chinese manufacturers producing in Europe, such as BYD, would also likely operate with relatively low EU value-added if left to their own devices, after all this is what their competitive advantage is built on. More than finished vehicle imports, this gradual increase in Chinese component sourcing poses a structural risk to Europe's supplier base. Even Chinese OEMs producing within the EU would face serious hurdles. BYD, for example, has not announced plans to localize battery cell production in Europe and would likely fail to meet the battery threshold. Chery's operations in Barcelona and Xpeng and GAC's assembly work in Graz would similarly struggle to comply. Importantly, many non-Chinese OEMs would also find it difficult to meet these thresholds - an issue that risks undermining the entire framework. Beyond defining content thresholds and determining who qualifies as part of the EU club, the central challenge is how these requirements would actually be applied in the automotive sector. This is not straightforward. Cars are predominantly purchased by private consumers, and the EU cannot easily prevent them from buying non-compliant but cheaper vehicles if they are available for purchase.

This time around, the French automaker has made sure that it offers everything which its rivals have to offer. This video comparison of the new Renault Duster and the Tata Sierra has been shared on YouTube by Vikas Auto Talks on their channel. It starts off by mentioning that the Duster in the video is the Iconic variant, which is the second top variant. Meanwhile, the Tata Sierra in front is the Accomplished variant. He then highlights that, as for the comparison, he will be comparing the Duster with the Adventure Plus variant of the Sierra, which sits below Accomplished. The first thing he compares about the two SUVs is the powertrain. He mentions that the Tata Sierra comes powered by a 1.5-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder engine, which makes 160 PS and 255 Nm of torque with a 7-speed DCT. Meanwhile, the Duster gets a 1.3-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder engine, which makes more power of 163 PS and 280 Nm of torque and comes mated to a 6-speed wet clutch DCT. Next up, he adds that the Duster gets a hydraulic strut-equipped bonnet, which is missing on the Sierra. Also, the vlogger points out that the Duster offers 212 mm of ground clearance, and the Sierra offers 205 mm. He then starts comparing the exterior design and features offered. The vlogger mentions that the Duster on the front gets six parking sensors and a front camera. Meanwhile, the Sierra only gets two parking sensors with a front camera. Both SUVs get LED headlights on the front. Following this, he then shows the side profile of this SUV and highlights that the Duster gets a set of 18-inch alloy wheels finished in black. Meanwhile, the Sierra Adventure Plus variant also gets 18-inch alloy wheels, but the vehicle seen in the video is the Accomplished variant, which gets 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. After this, he moves to the rear of the SUVs and highlights that the Duster comes equipped with a powered tailgate on the second top variant. Meanwhile, the Sierra only gets a powered tailgate on the top-of-the-line Accomplished+ variant. He adds that the Duster gets six parking sensors at the rear, while the Sierra only gets two. He mentions that the Tata Sierra gets a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument gauge cluster. France's drone production shifts from policy ambition to factory floor. August 6, 2026 France's push to enlist its car industry to produce military drones is moving to industrial implementation, as partnerships between automakers, car-part suppliers and defense firms turn lessons from the war in Ukraine into working assembly lines. Since the start of the year, at least six defense-automotive tie-ups have been announced, as President Emmanuel Macron's government seeks to combine the scale, automation and cost discipline of France's car sector with one of the fastest-growing segments of military technology. Ukraine and Russia's use of drones has reshaped warfare, and that has prompted France and its European allies to prioritise drone production, as pressure from Washington on Europe to boost its military capabilities has added urgency. The projects indicate France is building an industrial base capable of producing tens of thousands of drones a year - a scale difficult for defense startups to achieve alone, albeit one still dwarfed by Ukrainian and Russian efforts. France aims for scalable drone production. "Why now? Because the need is now, drones are now," Christophe Périllat, chief executive of auto parts supplier Valeo, told reporters at the end of July. "And why in France? Because we're being asked to guarantee our sovereignty." French defense officials do not anticipate a near-term need to deploy a large number of drones in the skies above France, but say it must be prepared for conflict. The goal is to give France the ability to produce drones quickly and ramp up output should a crisis arise, they say. A July report by the French Senate's defense committee described France's stock of just a few thousand drones as "insufficient to achieve a critical mass." Valeo has said it will manufacture electric drone motors in France for defense technology firm Harmattan AI. Meanwhile, Forvia unveiled a partnership last week with a European defense company specialising in AI-powered counter-drone systems and is weighing plans to build capacity in France to manufacture 1,000 interceptor drones each month. Renault, already working with Turgis & Gaillard to develop a long-range drone, partnered with Thales in June to industrialise production of the Toutatis kamikaze drone, targeting up to 1,000 units per month from 2027. French drone maker Delair teamed up with German automotive supplier Schaeffler the same month to establish a French production line capable of producing around 100 drones per day by November. Simplifying drone production for scale. If the plans announced by Renault, Schaeffler and Forvia are realized, combined output could reach 60,000 units per year. In a conflict, many more would be needed. Drones have been used in warfare for decades, but the war in Ukraine has seen an explosion in scale. Drones now dictate the flow of the battlefield, notching up the vast majority of kills. The front line has turned into a "kill zone," with soldiers hiding underground from the constant aerial threat. After Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine quickly accelerated its use of drones for reconnaissance, battlefield combat and long-range strikes. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in July that it will produce 10 million in 2026. Ukraine now has hundreds of drone makers, big and small. Some even produce more than Ukraine's military can buy, and the government has cautiously moved towards allowing them to export some excess production. Patrick Pailloux, head of France's defense procurement agency, said he was working in particular with auto subcontractors to design drones that France will be able to produce in large quantities. "It's not the same: producing a drone in a defense start-up and making something that can be reproduced in very large volumes using production-line robots," he said. Renault CEO François Provost said in June the Toutatis kamikaze drone was being redesigned with fewer components and from injection-moulded plastic, enabling cheaper, higher-volume production than the current 3D-printed model. Enough drones to train on, but not millions. Defense officials say the challenge is scaling up production capacity while not building stockpiles that could soon become obsolete. Patrice Caine, CEO of French defense technology group Thales, said this summer that drones were "objects that evolve quickly" under the impetus of technological advances. Pailloux said France needed "enough so that we can train, and (the production capacity) to be able to withstand a shock". Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu pledged a €150 million ($175 million) investment to develop a dedicated drone sector last December. But Antoine Level, head of France's drone industry association, said Germany was ahead of France in funding short-range drones, and that there were still "not enough orders to truly stimulate the industry."
