Requirements
  • A nursing degree from an accredited school is required.
  • Two years of experience as a circulating nurse are required.
  • A current registered nurse license in Tennessee is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor the daily surgical schedule to ensure appropriate staffing and that operating rooms, instruments, and other resources are ready according to surgeons’ requirements.
  • Make daily staff assignments and create the monthly schedule for operating-room and radiology-technician personnel.
  • Observe and ensure the performance competencies of operating-room nurses and technicians, conduct new-hire orientation and training, mentor and support staff, and ensure policies and procedures are followed.
  • Communicate with surgeons and sales representatives to determine the equipment and resources needed for specific cases.
  • Perform circulating-nurse duties and scrub in for surgical cases.
  • Assess patients, including recording vital signs and nursing history, and notify physicians of changes, reactions, or significant incidents.
  • Initiate patient education plans according to individual patient needs, develop plans of care from assessment data, and implement admission care.
  • Prepare rooms and sterile instruments and maintain inventory supplies.
  • Assist physicians during surgical procedures and confirm proper technique according to accepted standards of practice.
  • Respond to life-saving situations according to nursing standards, policies, and procedures while maintaining patient comfort and safety.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience working in a surgery center is preferred.
  • Experience as a charge nurse is preferred.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is preferred.
  • Neurological or orthopedic experience is preferred.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and professionally with patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers is desirable.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are desirable.
  • The ability to provide customer service while managing difficult or emotional situations is desirable.
