Requirements
  • At least 5 years of experience shipping embedded Linux systems in production, including board support package, kernel customization, and distribution ownership.
  • Proven experience writing production device drivers and working with Yocto or Buildroot for custom embedded distributions.
  • Ability to debug at the kernel level and trace software root causes using kernel tracing tools, serial consoles, and crash capture.
Responsibilities
  • Ship a production-grade custom embedded Linux distribution using Yocto with reproducible builds, fast deterministic startup, and release artifacts that the full engineering team can depend on across hardware revisions.
  • Own kernel and driver development end-to-end, including device tree, board bring-up, and peripheral enablement, so new hardware platforms are enabled on schedule with minimal downstream disruption.
  • Deliver reliable fleet tooling for provisioning, flashing, and over-the-air updates that scales from prototypes to high-volume production without manual intervention or data loss.
  • Build continuous integration and continuous delivery for embedded images and kernel builds to catch regressions before they reach hardware, reduce bring-up cycles, and unblock dependent teams faster.
  • Own the embedded Linux foundation for NEO from board support package and kernel through distribution, provisioning, and over-the-air updates, ensuring fast boot, stability, clean debugging, and reliable updates.
  • Treat the operating system as a product and take end-to-end responsibility from prototype bring-up through fleet-scale production hardening.
  • Read hardware schematics to reason about system behavior from software symptoms and reduce the time between firmware investigation and hardware root cause.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience designing and operating over-the-air update systems for embedded fleets, including rollback, partial updates, and reliability under real-world network conditions.
  • Familiarity with real-time Linux extensions such as PREEMPT_RT or low-latency kernel configuration for robotics or industrial applications.
  • Experience taking a hardware platform from early prototype through high-volume production, including reliability and optimization tradeoffs as hardware evolves.
  • Background in robotics, autonomous vehicles, or other physical systems where platform stability has direct operational consequences.

Neo has a soft body, moves slowly, carries up to 55 pounds, and runs for four hours per charge. However, the robot occasionally falls over and requires significant human assistance. Complex tasks require remote operation by 1X employees wearing VR headsets. OpenAI-backed 1X releases world model to power humanoid robots

Norwegian humanoid robot company 1X, backed by OpenAI, has released a new world model called 1X World Model (1XWM) designed to enhance robots' understanding and reasoning in the physical world. The model generates future videos from text and initial images during inference, then infers robot actions from these predictions. Trained on web videos and limited robot data, 1XWM targets 1X's Neo humanoid robot, currently in mass production for home use. Neo can generate predictive videos and reason about household tasks. However, the company noted the current model requires a dual modelling process for video and action generation and has not yet achieved true zero-shot execution. The development aims to give robots general behavioural capabilities for domestic scenarios.
