Columbia Sportswear ends flat-earth campaign, offers $100 off to participants

Columbia Sportswear has ended its year-long "Expedition Impossible" campaign, which promised to give away the company's assets to anyone who could prove the earth is flat. Launched in May, the humorous marketing effort attracted hundreds of submissions featuring theories, maps, diagrams and video evidence. Whilst no winner was declared, participants who submitted qualified entries will receive $100 off Columbia gear. Some will also receive novelty prizes including a taxidermied beaver and an old sled. The campaign won multiple awards at Cannes, including the Dan Wieden Titanium Lion, making it the most awarded campaign in company history. Columbia recently reported second-quarter sales of $614.4 million, up 2% from forecasts, suggesting its comedic marketing approach is resonating with consumers.

Tariff recovery fuels major profit upswing in Columbia Sportswear's Q2.

Tariff recovery fuels major profit upswing in Columbia Sportswear's Q2. Columbia Sportswear reported a marked improvement in second-quarter 2026 (Q2 FY26) profitability, citing the recovery of International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariff refunds as the main driver behind the growth in both gross margin and net income. For the quarter ending 30 June, Columbia posted a gross margin of 58.3%, a jump of over nine percentage points from the previous year. The company attributed around 980 basis points of this margin expansion directly to the recognition of US tariff refunds during the period. Without the impact of these refunds, Columbia stated that profit margins would have been in line with expectations. The company's net sales for the quarter rose 2% year-on-year to $614.4m, with broad-based growth in international markets counterbalancing weaker performance in the company's US wholesale business and brick-and-mortar stores. Operating income reached $30.9m, or 5.0% of net sales, reversing a $23.6m operating loss in the comparable quarter of 2025. Net income for the period totalled $26.6m, or $0.52 per diluted share compared with a $10m loss for the same period a year earlier. Columbia Sportswear chairman and chief executive officer Tim Boyle said: "Just Style is pleased to have delivered net sales exceeding its guidance for the second quarter, driven by the resilience of its international business, which was partly offset by continued softness in the US, amid growing global macroeconomic headwinds. "Our reported second quarter earnings and profit margins include the impact of US tariff refunds recognised during the quarter. Excluding this impact, our underlying performance was largely in-line with our expectations." First Half 2026 Financial Performance During the first half of 2026, Columbia Sportswear reported net sales of $1.39bn, marking a 1% increase compared to $1.38bn in the same period last year. Gross margin improved by 400 basis points to 54.1% of net sales, up from 50.1% the previous year. This increase was largely due to a 430 basis point gain from the recovery of IEEPA tariff refunds. Net income more than doubled to $60.9m, or $1.17 per diluted share, up from $32.1m, or $0.58 per diluted share, in the same period of 2025. Full Year 2026 Outlook Columbia Sportswear forecasts net sales for the 2026 financial year to rise by 1% to 3%, reaching between $3.43bn and $3.50bn, assuming US tariff rates remain unchanged. Gross margin is projected to increase to a range of 52.1% to 52.3%, reflecting a benefit from previously recovered IEEPA tariff refunds. The company anticipates an operating margin between 8.5% and 9.3%, up from 6.1% in 2025, while SG&A expenses are expected to represent 43.6% to 44.2% of sales, consistent with the prior year. Diluted earnings per share are set to grow to between $4.45 and $4.90, compared to $3.24 last year. Planned capital expenditures will remain between $65m and $75m. Third Quarter 2026 Guidance For the third quarter, net sales are forecast to range from $929m to $943m, reflecting a potential decrease of up to 1.5% compared to the same period of 2025, due largely to the timing of autumn season shipments. Operating income is expected to represent 8.1% to 9.5% of net sales, while diluted earnings per share are projected at $1.15 to $1.35, compared to $0.95 in the prior year's third quarter. "While our first half operating results have been in-line to slightly favourable overall as compared to our expectations at the start of the year, our outlook for the second half has incrementally moderated, largely due to external geopolitical and macroeconomic headwinds. That said, we continue to expect our full-year results to fall within the guidance ranges previously provided, excluding the impact of tariff refunds," Tim Boyle added. Columbia Sportswear posts 9% international growth as US faces traffic decline, secures $78M tariff refund

Columbia Sportswear reported Q2 2026 results showing international markets, which represent over 40% of sales, grew 9% while US sales declined 4% amid inflationary pressures affecting retail traffic. The company received $78 million in US tariff refunds during the quarter, significantly boosting margins. However, underlying gross margins contracted 50 basis points due to increased discounting. Columbia is refining its 'ACCELERATE' strategy into five pillars, with footwear showing high single-digit global growth led by technical innovations. The Spring 2027 wholesale order book indicates low to mid-single-digit growth. The company appointed Joe Vernachio as President of SOREL following a 14% sales decline in that brand. Management expects shipment timing shifts from Q3 to Q4 due to Red Sea conflict disruptions. Inventory decreased 6% in dollar terms, providing flexibility for promotional management.

Columbia Sportswear tops Q2 sales expectations.

Columbia Sportswear tops Q2 sales expectations. Columbia Sportswear reported stronger-than-expected second-quarter sales on Thursday, on the back of growth in international markets and momentum in its footwear business. The outdoor apparel and footwear company posted net sales of $614.4 million for the quarter ended June 30, up 2% from $605.2 million a year earlier. Growth across most international markets helped offset lower sales in the United States, where the company cited weaker wholesale demand for its spring collections and declines in its direct-to-consumer store business. The owner of the Columbia, Sorel, Mountain Hardwear and PrAna brands said net income totaled $26.6 million, or $0.52 per diluted share, compared with a net loss of $10.2 million, or $0.19 per diluted share, in the second quarter of 2025. Chairman and chief executive officer Tim Boyle said, "We're pleased to have delivered net sales exceeding our guidance for the second quarter, driven by the resilience of our international business, which was partly offset by continued softness in the U.S., amid growing global macroeconomic headwinds." The Portland, Oregon-based company highlighted progress in its multi-year "Accelerate" growth strategy, which aims to attract younger and more active consumers to the Columbia brand through investments in product innovation, marketing and digital capabilities. Introduced last year, the "Accelerate" initiative included the launch of Columbia's "Engineered for Whatever" global campaign, new products aimed at younger consumers and the relaunch of Columbia.com in the U.S. with updated features and photography. "We continue to see encouraging signs of progress with our "Accelerate" Growth Strategy. We are particularly pleased with our strong second quarter performance in Columbia brand footwear, one of the brand's strategic growth pillars," added Boyle. Looking ahead, Columbia maintained its full-year revenue forecast and expects net sales to increase between 1% and 3% in 2026, reaching between $3.43 billion and $3.5 billion. The company also raised its earnings outlook, projecting diluted earnings per share of $4.45 to $4.90, up from its previous forecast of $3.55 to $4.00. For the third quarter, Columbia expects revenue to range from $929 million to $943 million, representing a decline of 1.5% to flat growth compared with the same period last year, while diluted earnings per share are projected to be between $1.15 and $1.35.

Columbia Sportswear Q2 sales up 2% to $614M, boosted by $78M tariff refunds

Columbia Sportswear reported second-quarter sales of $614 million, up 2% year-on-year and exceeding guidance. International revenue grew 9% whilst US sales fell 4%, affected by weak store traffic and discretionary spending pressures. The company benefited from $78 million in US tariff refunds and interest, lifting gross margin to 58.3% and earnings per share to $0.52. Excluding refunds, Columbia would have posted a loss of $0.41 per share. The sportswear company maintained its full-year sales growth outlook of 1% to 3% and raised reported earnings per share guidance to $4.45–$4.90. Supply-chain disruptions will shift over $30 million of shipments from third to fourth quarter.
