NatWest opens US office in Connecticut after regulatory changes enable international expansion

NatWest Group is expanding into the US market after retreating following the financial crisis over a decade ago. The bank has received approval from the Federal Reserve to establish a representative office in Connecticut, which will enable it to strengthen relationships with US customers and market products to American companies. The expansion builds on NatWest's existing US presence, including a licensed broker-dealer in Stamford, Connecticut. Changes to UK ring-fencing rules in January 2025 removed restrictions that had prevented ring-fenced UK banks from establishing branches outside the European Economic Area, giving NatWest greater flexibility for international growth. The strategy follows NatWest's return to private ownership and its £2.7 billion acquisition of Evelyn Partners. The bank's strong profitability has provided financial capacity to invest in new growth opportunities.

Four major UK banks adopt Swift framework for faster, transparent remittances

Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and NatWest are among the first banks globally to implement Swift's new consumer payments framework, becoming the first in the UK to do so. The initiative, launched earlier this year and already supported by over 60 banks across 25 countries, will initially benefit customers receiving money from Australia, China, India and Turkey, and those sending money to Australia. The framework ensures recipients receive the full amount sent with no unexpected deductions, faster transfer times with potential instant delivery, transparent upfront costs showing fees and exchange rates, and end-to-end tracking capabilities. Swift's Adam Bealey said the framework represents an important step forward for UK payments, whilst HSBC's Mark Evans emphasised the bank's commitment to simpler, faster and more transparent international money movement.
