Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, microbiology, chemistry, or biological science is required for the Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist pathway.
- An Associate degree in clinical laboratory science, microbiology, chemistry, or biological science is required for the Medical Lab Technician pathway.
- Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist certification from ASCP, AMT, HEW, or an equivalent certification is required for the Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist 1 pathway.
- Medical Laboratory Technician certification from ASCP or an equivalent certification is required for the Medical Laboratory Technician pathways.
- Medical Laboratory Technicians must be eligible to sit for and pass Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist ASCP, AMT, or equivalent boards within six months.
- Employees must obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for assigned roles.
- The position requires compliance with CMS laboratory requirements, applicable state and federal regulations, company policies, laboratory protocols, standard operating procedures, and safety requirements.
Responsibilities
- Perform waived, moderate, and high-complexity testing using manual and automated processes in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Prepare reagents, quality-control materials, and other testing materials.
- Perform required equipment maintenance.
- Assist in data evaluation and correlation of new instruments and procedures.
- Manage the opening dates, expiration dates, and storage of specimens, quality-control materials, and reagents.
- Enter comments and use RBV for result reporting.
- Call critical values to appropriate personnel using the patient's full name, a second identifier, test name, results, and the identity of the person receiving the results.
- Assess patient results using inquiry and print patient reports.
- Recognize computer problems, report them to Information Technology, and troubleshoot within capabilities.
- Document activities during downtimes.
- Print and review shift-pending reports and note critical patients or patients with testing issues.
- Review and record quality-control results and troubleshooting steps for acceptability.
- Identify and resolve problems and take corrective action when evaluating testing procedures, patient results, and specimen integrity.
- Correctly identify specimens by matching the patient's name and medical record number.
- Review and record patient results for acceptability before verification.
- Assist the manager or director in writing and reviewing laboratory policies and procedures.
- Assist in training new personnel.
- Assist with preparing and maintaining facility accreditation readiness for CAP and DNV visits.
- Report safety-related incidents in a timely manner through the Midas/RDE tool.
- Attend required safety-related training and perform work safely while monitoring the work environment for safety issues.
- Keep required certifications and licenses current when applicable.
- Complete mandatory company modules and job-specific training within the specified timeframe.
Desired Qualifications
- One year of experience is preferred for the Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist 1 pathway.
- Three years of experience in an acute-care facility is preferred for the Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist 2 pathway.
- One year of experience is preferred for the Medical Laboratory Technician 1 pathway.
- One year of experience is preferred for the Medical Laboratory Technician 2 pathway.
