Requirements
  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Development certificate, plus two years of commercial custodial experience including one year of lead custodian experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of proper chemical storage, use, and inventory.
  • Organizational and planning skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and follow through on delegated tasks and assignments.
  • Ability to make efficient use of personnel as instructed and work effectively independently or with a team.
  • Knowledge of custodial and sanitation policies, practices, procedures, methods, safety standards, and safety practices.
  • Skill in operating cleaning equipment including buffers, strippers, waxers, vacuums, and carpet-cleaning machines; cleaning windows; dusting furniture; and unstopping toilets.
  • Ability to perform maintenance functions and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, department heads, county employees, outside agencies, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality in business and facility interactions.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends, and potentially late nights.
  • Ability to be on call and respond to call-outs and emergency situations.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.
  • Ability to clear a pre-employment physical and drug screen.
  • Valid Texas driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance, and personal injury insurance.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish.
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours during the workweek when required.
  • Ability to work in indoor environments with temperature variations, hazards, damp or wet surfaces, extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, odors, and loud noises.
  • Ability to frequently move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to frequently move throughout buildings, position oneself to perform essential functions, and operate tools and equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Lead employees in custodial services, including cleaning activities, scheduling, staff assignment, and training.
  • Provide motivation and direction to custodial team members.
  • Take initiative and work independently to meet building occupants' needs within supervisor-established guidelines.
  • Plan, assign, monitor, and inspect custodians' work.
  • Enforce custodial staff use of personal protective equipment.
  • Assist the Custodial Supervisor with regular area inspections.
  • Work with the Custodial Supervisor to maintain rapport between custodial and building staff.
  • Lead custodial operations when the Custodial Supervisor is absent.
  • Perform routine custodial duties including dusting, mopping, vacuuming, sanitizing, cleaning restrooms and kitchens, and restocking supplies.
  • Perform routine maintenance on custodial equipment and supplies.
  • Empty trash receptacles, dispose of trash in compactors or dumpsters, and bag trash for disposal.
  • Unlock doors and ensure they are locked after cleaning areas.
  • Report facility needs and concerns to the Custodial Supervisor, including recommending or submitting work orders and checking supply levels.
  • Ensure proper care and maintenance of equipment and supplies and promote workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Use chemical and cleaning solutions safely and properly and replenish housekeeping carts.
  • Perform cleaning functions specific to assigned facilities and seasonal or project requirements.
  • Share responsibility for delivering services and meeting custodial guidelines.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
