Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • At least six months of Registered Nurse experience is required for Staff Nurse II.
  • An active California Registered Nurse license is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification is required.

Responsibilities
  • Assess, collect, and document health assessment data focusing on the physical, emotional, spiritual, psychosocial, and educational needs of patients.
  • Interview patients, families, or significant others to complete triage information.
  • Identify actual and potential needs, determine priorities, and identify barriers to learning.
  • Complete and document initial and ongoing assessments, focusing on abnormal systems and actual and potential problems.
  • Plan nursing care based on patients' priority physical and psychosocial-emotional needs.
  • Develop realistic short-term goals for each problem with the patient, family, or significant others.
  • Demonstrate understanding of age-related patient needs when planning care.
  • Coordinate with patients, families, significant others, and health care team members to plan education and discharge needs.
  • Implement plans of care, including prescribed procedures and treatments.
  • Organize and prioritize care based on individual needs and unit activity.
  • Assess changes in patients' conditions and the appropriateness of plans of care.
  • Initiate interventions using appropriate clinical expertise and knowledge.
  • As primary nurse, coordinate health care team activities for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care and plans of care according to patients' current conditions and changing needs.
  • Document patients' status and responses to care accurately and concisely.
  • Assess physical, psychosocial-emotional, educational, discharge, age-related, assault, and abuse-related needs in emergency nursing practice.
  • Analyze patient data including vital signs, medical history, physical examination findings, laboratory values, and age-specific criteria to determine appropriate care.
  • Use advanced emergency nursing knowledge and skills to implement prioritized, patient-centered interventions.
  • Provide age-specific health education and teaching to patients, family members, and significant others, including treatment, discharge, and follow-up instructions.
  • Perform procedures including intravenous catheter and fluid initiation, medication administration, dressings, and patient teaching within the scope of practice and applicable policies.
  • Perform nursing procedures and skills including cardiac monitoring, rhythm interpretation, defibrillation, conscious sedation monitoring, and arterial blood gas procedures.
  • Recognize and respond quickly to emergency medical situations by assessing airways, breathing, and circulation, initiating emergency treatment such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and oxygen, and communicating critical information to team members.
  • Maintain required credentials and training.
  • Remain current on emergency treatments, practices, and procedures through staff meetings, continuing education, in-services, and professional literature.
  • Integrate new knowledge from education and research into clinical practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competence in age-related patient care.
  • Follow applicable state and federal regulations, including Title XXII and COBRA/EMTALA, and comply with The Joint Commission, California Department of Public Health, and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services guidelines.
  • Advocate for public health and safety through patient and family education.
  • Complete required documentation of emergency services visits.
  • Perform Relief Charge Registered Nurse duties when called upon.
  • Adhere to departmental and medical center policies regarding scheduling, overtime, sick time, and time off.
  • Arrive punctually, take appropriate breaks, and use sick time appropriately.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • Six months of current emergency room and triage experience or completion of the Seton emergency room Nurse Training Program.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification is preferred.
  • Proficiency in the Evident computerized documentation system is preferred.
