IMAX hits $257M record month as cinema stocks surge while Netflix drops 21%

IMAX, Cinemark, and AMC are significantly outperforming Netflix in 2026 as cinema audiences return to theatres. Year-to-date, IMAX stock is up 38%, Cinemark 64%, and AMC 82%, whilst Netflix has declined 21%. IMAX recorded its strongest month ever in July, generating $257 million globally — 47% above its previous record. "The Odyssey" drove the surge, earning $221 million in IMAX ticket sales alone and surpassing $640 million worldwide. The broader cinema revival stems from major releases including "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey", alongside increased premium viewing options. IMAX shares reached an all-time high of $50.72 following the record-breaking July performance.

Theaters report Q2 revenue uptick: let's talk why.

Theaters report Q2 revenue uptick: let's talk why. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was nothing for theaters to worry about. Life was grand and so was the box office. All of that changed REAL quick once things shut down. Ever since then, box office metrics have often been measured in pre and post COVID times. There's been a lot of stress about how theaters are faring, but the latest second quarter earnings for 2026 have been great. Let's talk about why. Theater profits are up. Cinemark, one of the bigger theater chains in the country, saw a rise in sales for the quarter of up to $1.1 billion. That's up 15% from the previous quarter. It no doubt helps that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie came out in April and eventually crossed the billion dollar mark. There's also the double whammy of Obsession and Backrooms that hit in May. Those two films alone made between them, around $850 million. Let's not forget Michael, the biopic that critics were NOT into, but audiences loved. Loved it to the tune of over a billion dollars worldwide. The 2nd quarter also included the premiere of Toy Story 5 which also joined the billion dollar club during the course of its continuing run. Cinemark CEO, Sean Gamble gave credit to more than just the films. He said, "Our achievements reflect the significant progress we've made enhancing our consumer offerings, scaling revenue opportunities and further optimizing our business, combined with the impact of solid operating rigor in a robust box office environment." That might be one of the most bland statements ever issued by a human being. It says absolutely nothing about why there were successful in Q2. Actual reasons to celebrate. What people should be doing is taking the time to acknowledge what's actually helping the industry right now. A big part of that is exciting films that are taking chances with new ideas. Backrooms and Obsession helped reignite people's sense of imagination and excitement in movies. And while Nerdbot didn't really need a Toy Story 5, it was still a seven year gap between entries. That's a lot more time than between Moana 2 and a live-action remake of the first one that no one asked for. That's what cinema owners should be celebrating. They should be saying, "We're proud to feature movies that are novel, untested, and take chances. We should continue to cherish when films take big swings in new or forgotten territories. Those are the experiences that bring people into our seats and keep the magic of the movie going experience alive and well." There is good reason to celebrate the second quarter of this year in film. But Nerdbot should be celebrating it for the right reasons so Nerdbot can carry that light into the rest of the year.

Cinemark Q2 revenue hits $1 billion milestone as exhibitors bask in box office recovery.

Cinemark Q2 revenue hits $1 billion milestone as exhibitors bask in box office recovery. Aug 2, 2026 Cinemark and Marcus Theatres, two of the four largest exhibitors in the United States, reported tremendous earnings this week for the second quarter period. Cinemark earned $1.1 billion in global revenue, a 15% increase over last year's Q2, headlined by a record-setting $540 million in global ticket sales. Ticket sales were particularly strong for seats in Cinemark's pricier Premium Large Format auditoriums, which include ScreenX 270-degree panoramic projection and D-Box motion seating. Cinemark also reported $433 million in concession revenue with record breaking per-cap spending among domestic audiences and strong spending on merchandise items. Marcus Theatres also showed similar trends in their second quarter earnings report, albeit at a smaller scale. Marcus's gross revenues increased by 14% to $151 million while net income increased by 70% to $27 million. The CEOs at both Cinemark and Marcus Theatres credited the Q2 uptick to the strong slate of studio releases during the period. Cinemark CEO Sean Gamble explained, "While established IP and sequels were certainly an important component to the overall box office, the breakout success of originals like OBSESSION and BACKROOMS connected with Gen Z and young adult audiences to deliver huge surprise contributions to the box office. The success of small and mid-sized original films played a critical role in diversifying the box office and making the industry less dependent on individual tentpole films." The strong Q2 film slate has lifted the fortunes of all exhibitors, with strong results reported last week by AMC and IMAX as well.

Cinemark posts record $1.1 billion second quarter revenue on box office rebound.

Cinemark posts record $1.1 billion second quarter revenue on box office rebound. The exhibition giant blew past the milestone for the first time ever as CEO Sean Gamble praised Hollywood studios for delivering a "compelling slate of films." July 30, 2026 6:40am Cinemark has hit the $1 billion total revenue milestone for the first time ever in a second quarter. The exhibition giant disclosed the figure in its earnings report as CEO Sean Gamble praised Hollywood studios for delivering a "compelling slate of films." The theater chain saw overall revenues hit $1.09 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, up 15.5 percent from year-ago revenues of $940.5 million as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael, Toy Story 5, and breakout horror pics like Obsession and Backrooms played across its circuit. Admissions revenue jumped to a record $540 million, compared to a year-earlier $467.1 million, while concession revenue also hit a quarterly record of $433.3 million, against $377.7 million in the same period of 2025. The record results came as the multiplex continues to see a box office recovery on a more diverse and sustained supply of movies from the Hollywood studios. "We commend our sensational team for their outstanding execution, and we applaud our studio partners for delivering such a fulsome and compelling slate of films that meaningfully connected with audiences throughout the quarter," Cinemark CEO Sean Gamble said in a statement on Thursday. During a morning analyst call, Gamble pointed to exhibition industry trends expected to sustain the current box office recovery, including consumer spending remaining "stable" and a widening summer movie-going season. "I remember years ago the summer would have started in June, and now that became May and it's kind of crept out into April. So the periods just continue to expand a bit as we've seen that movies will do real solid business any time of the year," Gamble said. The theater chief said audiences under the age of 25 are also more willing to disconnect from their cell phones to share in what's on the big screen. "They're valuing the experience more than other generations because it's more differentiated. It's a communal experience together and it's just a whole different level of energy and connectivity," Gamble argued. His company reported net income of $140.8 million for the latest quarter, or $1.20 in earnings per-share, against a year-earlier $94.7 million in net income, or 81 cents per-share. Adjusted EBITDA for the second quarter was $294 million, compared with $232.2 million for the same period of 2025. Cinemark is expected to carry over its second quarter performance into the current financial period as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day play on its screens. And looking beyond to 2027, Gamble said the volume of Hollywood releases into next year like Avengers: Secret Wars and Frozen 3 would also help get consumers off the couch and heading back to theaters. Of course, how movies perform in theaters as opposed to box office projections is always an unknown, Gamble told analysts, before adding: "We're certainly looking optimistically at 2027 based on what we know, but ultimately it's going to be a matter of again the quality of the content, the marketing effectiveness and how it ultimately performs throughout the year, and how spread out that performance is in terms of what it ultimately amounts to in total box office." Also reporting earnings the same day as Cinemark was Marcus Theatres, the fourth-largest chain in the U.S. The exhibitor saw $150.6 million in revenue, a 14 percent gain year-over-year. Notably, the chain's chief, Jeffry F. Tomachek, said that Toy Story 5 had powered Marcus' highest total revenue for a June opening weekend. Marcus also disclosed that average ticket prices rose about 5 percent in the quarter.
