Requirements
  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant
  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
  • Currently licensed (or eligible) in the state of South Carolina as a Physician Assistant by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners or as a PMHNP with the SC Board of Nursing
  • Requires certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • DHEC and DEA license applications must be submitted prior to first day
Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive mental health evaluations to determine the appropriate level of care for the patient
  • Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations
  • Evaluates and treats based on history, mental status examination, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline
  • Performs the following therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief
  • Initiates referrals to other health care providers, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician when appropriate
  • Documents and bills for direct care provided
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
  • Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research, when appropriate
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
  • Potential to precept trainees at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider trainee; and facilitates the learning of other new team members
  • Works to understand the needs of patients and their families, and assists with care planning and goal setting, working to resolve conflicts when they arise
  • Assumes responsibility for management of care for assigned patient caseload, establishing treatment plans with collaborating/supervising physician and monitoring treatment response and clinical practice
  • Monitor care when delivered, clinical expert, role model and teacher/preceptor for nurses, students, interns and residents
Desired Qualifications
  • Minimum of one year of mental health provider experience as an APP
