Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Maintain working knowledge of medical symptoms, signs, and anatomical systems to identify and differentiate the type and urgency of medical needs.
  • Conduct patient evaluations to obtain information necessary to develop effective treatment plans.
  • Ensure patients have access to eligible insurance and social service programs.
  • Maintain knowledge of insurance referral requirements to ensure access based on third-party reimbursement criteria.
  • Remind patients about upcoming appointments and act as a liaison between patients and providers.
  • Provide patients with required appointment and payment-policy information, including parking, cash policies, anticipated charges, required ancillary services, and cancellation policies.
  • Identify and resolve real or perceived barriers to care.
  • Intervene as a liaison and advocate for patients, physicians, and staff to facilitate ease of care, and assist in identifying care-delivery trouble spots and problem patterns.
  • Educate and counsel patients on issues related to their health and life situations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of community health, welfare resources, and other programs available to patients.
  • Assist in building partnerships with local community physicians and referral sources for the UHealth systems.
  • Assist lower-level Patient Navigators as needed.
  • Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
  • Ensure that Central Insurance Verification clears patient visits, interceding with Medicare and Medicaid patients seen only by the counselor.
  • Ensure patients complete the Progeny questionnaire before visits or arrange rescheduling through the Navigator or Genetic Counselor Assistant.
  • Send test kits to laboratories for test orders, verify lab orders, provide insurance and encounter orders as needed, upload test results to patient records, and notify providers or counselors when results are ready for review.
  • Minimize open appointment slots by contacting patients about earlier visits and coordinating with Central Scheduling regarding open locations and days.
  • Manage DEP templates for Cancer Genetics counselors and physicians seeing cancer patients.
  • Open and close provider schedules based on out-of-office requests, communicate patient-impacting closures to leadership, and communicate with providers when cross-coverage is needed.
  • Run monthly reports on patients seen by provider and location.
  • Run monthly reports on patients seen with and without coverage and with and without self-pay and insurance payments.
  • Manage the Progeny website and Ambry Genetics pedigree system, including granting staff access, troubleshooting login issues, and working with the Progeny help team to resolve escalated issues.
