Sparks honored with Soaring Eagle Award. August 10, 2026 3:13 p.m. * Debbie and Tony Sparks At its annual Inner Circle Donor Recognition Event on July 31st, the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Foundation presented its highest award to Tony & Debbie Sparks of Mattoon. They are the 20th recipient of this special award since the hospital opened in 1977. The Soaring Eagle Award recognizes an outstanding individual couple or business that truly shines - who's been an inspiration to not only Sarah Bush Lincoln, but also to people across the region. "Debbie and I are touched and honored to receive this award," Tony said. "The depth and quality of services that Sarah Bush Lincoln offers are unheard of for communities our size, and we believe it's important to help the hospital continue its mission. We are pleased to be able to support Sarah Bush Lincoln, and we have great appreciation for others who do the same." The Sparks are long-time supporters of Sarah Bush Lincoln. They both served on the Capital Campaign to build Willow Breeze Hospice House, and Tony currently serves on the Expanding Hope Campaign Committee to support the expansion of the Regional Cancer Center. They've supported nearly every capital campaign and major initiative at Sarah Bush Lincoln, including Willow Breeze, construction and expansion of the Cancer Center, Children's Dental Program, Peace Meal Senior Nutrition, Heart Center and more. Tony is currently Secretary of the SBL Health Foundation Board and formerly served on the Health Center Board. Debbie is a member of WomenConnected and has served on its Steering Committee. "Tony and Debbie's volunteerism and support have not only helped Sarah Bush Lincoln thrive, but have also helped shape many local not-for-profit organizations, leading to their growth and prosperity, therefore making this community stronger," said SBL President and CEO Kim Uphoff. "We are deeply grateful for both of them and we're very proud to name them our 2026 Soaring Eagle recipients." Their three daughters: Megan, Mindy and Melanie, as well as one of their granddaughters, Aubrey were present at the Inner Circle event to celebrate alongside them. Debbie is a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, has served on the YMCA May Merriment committee and has been involved with Women's Ministry and The Fields Church Flourish Fundraising committee. She was a member of Delta Theta Tau Philanthropic Sorority and was extensively involved in PTO activities while their girls were in school. In addition to his time as CEO of the Mattoon YMCA, Tony's community involvement includes service as a board member for First Mid Bancshares, Coles County Habitat for Humanity, Mattoon Community Food Center, Eastern Illinois Foodbank, Mattoon Area Industrial Development, and Mattoon Pride Softball. Throughout the community, they support many causes that impact faith, wellness, youth and family. They've supported their church initiatives including the recent Fields Church expansion project, the YMCA and other organizations that they have been or continue to be a part of. "Tony and I are so grateful to be a part of the SBL Inner Circle and to be recognized as the 20th Soaring Eagle recipient," Debbie said. "It was especially wonderful to be surrounded by our daughters and granddaughter, and so many friends at this event." SBL Hospice Binga set for September 1. August 5, 2026 11:26 a.m. The Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Foundation will host its 19th annual SBL Hospice Binga on Tuesday, September 1, at the Mattoon Eagles Club, 1917 Oak Avenue. Net proceeds support the SBL Willow Breeze Hospice House Endowment. Contributions to Hospice Binga directly impact people throughout East Central and Southern Illinois by helping those with limited resources pay for their stay at Willow Breeze. "Willow Breeze has already impacted many families in the region," SBL Special Events Officer Kim Lockart said. "Proceeds from Binga will support the endowment and ensure that we can continue to help families who need assistance." Admission tickets are available for $10 each, which includes 10 regular Binga games. Raffle tickets are also available for $5 each, or three for $10, for a chance to win a Nintendo Switch 2 Console featuring a vivid, 7.9" LCD touch screen with 256 GB of internal storage. Along with the console, the "choose your game bundle" allows the raffle winner to choose one of three games: Donkey Kong Bonanza, Mario Kart World or Pokémon Pokopia. The bundle is donated by County Office Products, Inc. The winner will be drawn on September 1 during SBL Hospice Binga, but you need not be present to win. Sarah Bush Lincoln nationally recognized for commitment to excellence in stroke care. July 16, 2026 3:04 p.m. Sarah Bush Lincoln continues to be recognized for its commitment to quality stroke care, as it was recently honored with two American Heart Association awards: The Rural Stroke Gold award and the Stroke Silver Plus award. "It is truly humbling to be recognized by the American Heart Association again, and it is a reflection of our staff's dedication to providing compassionate, quality care," SBL President and CEO Kim Uphoff said. "We pride ourselves on being a trusted healthcare organization serving a rural community, and these awards reinforce our mission." Rural Stroke Gold is a recognition program designed specifically to recognize hospitals serving rural communities. Rather than focusing on the standard achievement measure methodology, eligibility is based on performance in the Rural Acute Stroke Composite Score, which reflects performance across several stroke care processes important in rural settings. To earn Silver, hospitals must demonstrate sustained adherence to the American Heart Association's core stroke achievement measures for 12 consecutive months, and the "Plus" designation recognizes additional performance on quality measures. These awards symbolize that SBL ensures people experiencing a stroke receive timely, appropriate treatment based on nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, helping to save lives and reduce disability. In addition to providing immediate care for people experiencing a stroke, the award also recognizes that SBL provides education to help them manage their recovery and ongoing health at home. "Strokes continue to be one of the leading causes of death and disability in the nation, and the key to limiting its effects is treating someone experiencing symptoms right away," SBL Neurologist Fatima Alao, MD, said. $1 million donation to Sarah Bush Lincoln honors Ike & Joan Kennard. A gift of $1 million has been made to the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Foundation, in honor of Eastern Illinois University Hall of Fame Member Ivan "Ike" Kennard and his wife Joan. Thanks to this donation by Marlys and Carl Fallen, their daughter and son-in-law, the Kennards will be recognized in the newly-expanded Regional Cancer Center once construction is complete, as well as in a soon-to-be-announced, major addition to the hospital. "This gift from Marlys and Carl is an amazing, impactful donation that will honor two very special people, while helping Sarah Bush Lincoln expand to meet the growing demand for healthcare services in this region," said Amy Card, SBL Health Foundation Director. "If you're from Coles County, and especially if you attended EIU, you either knew - or knew of - Ike and Jo Kennard! And now, their legacy continues to live on in another special way - a way that will help expand healthcare to residents in area communities - thanks to this wonderful donation by their daughter and son-in-law, two very special people. We are so extremely grateful for their generosity!" Ike and Joan were married in 1943. He attended Eastern Illinois University and was a World War II Navy pilot for three years while she graduated from Eastern Illinois State Teacher's College. After his release from the service, he operated the old Ko-Op restaurant for Walt Warmoth. In 1948, he purchased the Little Campus from Warmoth which later came to be known as "IKE'S", a staple of the Charleston and EIU communities. He went on to develop the University Village shopping center. Ike was well known for employing hundreds of EIU students, including Panther athletes. Together with his wife, they were steadfast supporters of the EIU Panther Athletic Program "On behalf of our entire organization and our boards of directors, we could not be more grateful for this donation from Marlys and Carl," said Kim Uphoff, President & CEO of Sarah Bush Lincoln Health System. "The impact that this gift makes on our community, our patients and our organization is tremendous, as we continue to expand both our footprint and the services that we offer in this region. Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, a tax-exempt nonprofit that receives significant public funding to perform services also offered by the state, was approved to receive a $100,000 grant in FY2024, according to passed legislation data extracted from the Illinois General Assembly 's FY2024 budget (Public Act 102-6 0698).
