Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Five or more years of relevant survey and/or computer-aided design experience in the land development or land survey industry are required.
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures is required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in land surveying and/or surface modeling software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, SmartDraft, Trimble Access, or similar civil engineering design software is required.
  • The ability to work independently and within a team environment is required.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization and external partners is required.
  • Problem-solving ability, a strong work ethic, commitment to quality, and the ability to manage multiple time-sensitive tasks are required.
  • Data analysis and interpretation skills are required.
Responsibilities
  • Work with management to prepare and finalize project deliverables and contract documents in accordance with company standards, municipal and jurisdictional requirements, survey standards, and client requirements.
  • Perform work under limited supervision and receive direction on complex assignments with general guidance on execution.
  • Review work produced by staff for quality assurance.
  • Serve as a lead or resource among colleagues in equivalent roles by sharing technical proficiency, guidance, and mentorship; occasionally assist in delegating assignments or providing feedback to managers.
  • Interact professionally with internal and external clients.
  • Prepare working drawings from ALTA surveys for final approval and submission.
  • Use critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to start and complete projects with limited supervision and manage multiple projects at one time.
  • Convert applicable data into electronically generated drawings and project documents with accuracy, neatness, and speed.
  • Perform horizontal and vertical computations for boundary surveys and analyses of field location and record information.
  • Read and understand client requests, municipal and jurisdictional standards and specifications, and other project documents, and ensure they are followed.
  • Draft final house location surveys from survey crew field notes and personal field measurements of building improvements.
  • Compute horizontal and vertical positions of planned buildings, streets, curbs, and other features for stakeouts.
  • Check record plats for completeness and accuracy before submitting them for review.
  • Submit plots to various municipal and jurisdictional agencies for review.
  • Apply knowledge of ALTA Land Title Surveys, topographic surveys, boundary surveys, residential and commercial construction stakeout procedures and practices.
  • Perform complex computations for traverses, record plats, boundary surveys, construction stakeouts, horizontal control, and related work.
  • Conduct research using Google Earth, VDOT, GIS, and data from other agencies.
  • Complete land-development-related surveys, boundary surveys, ALTA surveys, topographic surveys, construction layout, and subdivision layout as needed.
  • Travel locally during the business day and occasionally travel out of the area or overnight according to business needs.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate's degree in survey, geography, architecture, or civil engineering is preferred; commensurate relevant experience may be considered.
  • A Surveyor-in-Training certificate is preferred.
  • Relevant survey licensure is a plus.
