Requirements
  • The Project Superintendent is expected to have 3-5 years of skilled trade or engineering experience, including knowledge of roadway, structure, and bridge construction methods, materials, standards, and specifications, and at least 1 year of successfully leading and managing people.
  • The Project Superintendent needs complete knowledge of the contract and the programs that drive the project, including MRP.
  • Working knowledge of state and federal safety, environmental, and EEO/DBE guidelines and regulations is required.
  • Working skill in operating computer equipment, software programs, and field inspection equipment is required.
  • The employee must be able to provide technical supervision and leadership to other staff.
  • The employee must be able to read and interpret roadway, bridge, and structure plans and contract specifications.
  • The employee must maintain detailed records and communicate effectively with agency and contractor personnel and the general public.
  • The employee must be able to obtain Advanced Department of Transportation certification, or MOT certification if working in Canada.
  • Operation of heavy equipment as needed is required.
  • A valid driver's license with a good driving record is required.
  • The employee must be able to recognize hazards inherent in routine and non-routine tasks and adjust work methods to avoid loss, injury, or accident.
  • The employee must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and work over and around water, from heights, and in tight spaces.
Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day field operations to ensure contract standards are met in a cost-effective, safe, and efficient manner.
  • Hold overall responsibility for project operations and maintenance; verify work, interpret the contract, and direct and advise Zone Superintendents on schedules and subcontractor work.
  • Collaborate with the Project Manager to coordinate the development, implementation, and evaluation of a services plan consistent with client needs and the contract.
  • Manage Zone Superintendents to ensure completion of condition assessments for pavements, signs, guardrails, bridges, vegetation, tunnels, and other contract requirements.
  • Direct and advise Zone Superintendents on whether to self-perform or subcontract work to bring assets into contract compliance, considering cost, timeliness, and efficiency.
  • Source and qualify new subcontractors.
  • Monitor operational and financial performance, conduct operational and financial analysis, and prepare performance information and recommendations for periodic management reports.
  • Serve as technical advisor to Zone Superintendents and subcontractors.
  • Review work schedules from Zone Superintendents, checking budgets, timelines, and safe operations, and brief the Project Manager on scheduled work after approval.
  • Inspect in-process work and review completed work with Quality Control to ensure compliance with contract requirements.
  • Act as a communication link between the Project Manager and operations personnel.
  • Ensure direct reports actively supervise, schedule, and evaluate personnel, and coach direct reports on management techniques.
  • Obtain, inspect, and control fleet resources, including maintenance and fuel cards, and manage, monitor, and control project assets and materials.
  • Ensure proper work reporting, timesheets, budgeting, and other systems; prepare reports and correspondence as necessary; and ensure data in the MMIS is accurate.
  • Review customer service logs with the administration team and ensure correct and timely resolutions.
  • Practice safe work methods and remain accident- and injury-free.
  • Work in office and field environments, including heat and cold, with minimal travel and occasional holidays, nights, and weekends required.
