Responsibilities
  • Define and execute the global Clinical Data and Artificial Intelligence strategy aligned to enterprise evidence-generation and artificial-intelligence transformation goals.
  • Establish a unified operating model integrating clinical systems, the Clinical Data Lake and central data model, data management and data engineering, and artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced analytics.
  • Serve as the enterprise authority on clinical data architecture and artificial-intelligence enablement for clinical and medical affairs across business units and geographies.
  • Partner with Clinical Study Management, Clinical Strategy, Regulatory, Medical Affairs, Statistics, and Information Technology to define data-driven evidence strategies.
  • Own the design, governance, and evolution of the Clinical Data Lake, standardized data models, clinical systems ecosystem, data pipelines, transformations, and interoperability frameworks.
  • Ensure scalable, compliant, and extensible architecture supporting cross-study analytics, real-world data integration, and device-to-clinical-data linkage.
  • Drive standardization using models such as Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium-based models and eliminate data silos.
  • Lead the development and deployment of artificial-intelligence and machine-learning capabilities across the clinical lifecycle, including data-quality automation and monitoring, artificial-intelligence-assisted clinical study reporting and analytics, and cross-study insights and meta-analyses.
  • Drive integration of artificial intelligence into core workflows and establish best practices for model development, validation, monitoring, traceability, reproducibility, and regulatory alignment.
  • Oversee collaboration between data science, statistics, and programming teams.
  • Own the strategy and execution for synthetic clinical data generation, simulation frameworks for study design and operational planning, and virtual-twin development for patient- and study-level modeling.
  • Ensure synthetic and simulated data align with regulatory expectations for transparency and scientific validity, and integrate them into study-design optimization and evidence generation.
  • Oversee the global clinical data management function, ensuring high-quality, consistent, and inspection-ready data, efficient study startup and closeout, risk-based monitoring, and analytics-driven data review.
  • Embed artificial intelligence, machine-learning modeling, and automation into clinical data management workflows to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Ensure alignment with regulatory and compliance standards including the Food and Drug Administration, European Union Medical Device Regulation, General Data Protection Regulation, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • Own the alignment and integration of statistical programming outputs, including tables, figures, and listings and Analysis Data Model outputs, with clinical programming data pipelines and transformations.
  • Ensure seamless data flow from raw data through analysis-ready datasets to reporting, and drive standardization, automation, and reuse across studies and programs.
  • Leverage artificial-intelligence solutions to accelerate programming across Global Clinical and Medical Affairs.
  • Own intake, prioritization, and delivery across data-platform initiatives, artificial-intelligence and machine-learning programs, and study-level data operations.
  • Implement scalable delivery models for standardized multi-source clinical-outcomes datasets from the Clinical Data Lake to key business-stakeholder teams.
  • Optimize resourcing across high-throughput standardized work and high-complexity artificial-intelligence and data-science initiatives.
  • Ensure all clinical data and artificial-intelligence activities are compliant with global regulatory requirements, traceable, auditable, and reproducible.
  • Establish governance across data standards and lineage, the artificial-intelligence model lifecycle, and data privacy and security.
  • Support regulatory submissions with robust, defensible data strategies.
Desired Qualifications
  • A PhD or Master's degree in Data Science, Biostatistics, Computer Science, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience with Databricks is preferred.

The initiative provides ASCs with access to clinical expertise, procedural technologies and data analytics to support growth and patient outcomes in value-based care settings. The company is expanding its ASC ONE delivery model into an integrated platform that simplifies centre development and accelerates facility readiness. ASC ONE coordinates services including facility design, construction, financing and clinical enablement through a single point of contact. Smith+Nephew has partnered with STERIS Unity Health Centers, Brasfield & Gorrie, Ghafari and Hopper Healthcare to provide expertise across the ASC lifecycle. Smith+Nephew has completed the first clinical cases using its next-generation CORI XT Handheld Robotics Platform for knee and shoulder arthroplasty. The platform is designed as a single handheld robotics system for various orthopaedic procedures, including partial to revision knee, hip, and anatomic and reverse shoulder surgeries. The first shoulder arthroplasty cases were performed at Duke Health by Dr Christopher Klifto, who used CORI SHOULDER Handheld Robotic Arthroplasty with the AETOS Shoulder System. Dr Bertrand Kaper subsequently completed the first CORI XT shoulder cases in an ambulatory surgery centre setting in Scottsdale, Arizona. The platform supports both hospital and ambulatory surgical centre environments, with a compact footprint tailored to different facility needs. Smith+Nephew's approach aims to enhance surgeon expertise whilst maintaining clinical control and workflow efficiency.

Smith+Nephew launches next-gen LEAF system, cutting pressure injury odds by 73% and saving hospitals up to $1.8M

Smith+Nephew has launched the next generation LEAF Patient Monitoring System in the US, a pressure injury prevention platform designed to reduce hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs). The cloud-hosted system uses wearable sensors to monitor patient mobility and provide real-time turn status updates, improving workflow efficiency and protocol adherence. HAPIs cause approximately 60,000 annual deaths in the US and cost the economy $26.8 billion yearly. The LEAF system has demonstrated a 73% reduction in HAPI odds compared to standard care and delivers up to $1.8 million in estimated savings per critical care facility. The enhanced platform features an improved user interface developed with nursing teams and integrates seamlessly with hospital electronic medical records. It currently monitors over 150,000 patients annually across healthcare facilities.

Bernstein cuts Smith & Nephew price target to $31.85 after Q1 sales miss expectations

Bernstein has cut its price target on Smith & Nephew to $31.85 from $36.20, maintaining a Market Perform rating. The adjustment followed the medical device company's fiscal Q1 trading update, which showed organic sales growth of 3.1%, missing the consensus estimate of 3.8%. Canaccord also reduced its price target to $30 from $32 the same day, keeping a Hold rating. Smith+Nephew is launching two chronic wound care products at the European Wound Management Association Conference in Bremen from 6–8 May 2026. The innovations address a challenge affecting up to 14.9 million people in Europe and consuming up to 4% of healthcare spending. ALLEVYN COMPLETE CARE Foam Dressing features a five-layer construction with Enhanced ExuLOCK Technology that locks in exudate and bacteria, releasing up to 100 times fewer bacteria than other foam dressings. The product includes an ExuMASK Change Indicator for longer wear times and ShearDEFENSE technology to protect against pressure injuries. RENASYS EDGE Negative Pressure Wound Therapy System offers a lightweight, portable pump with modular design that eliminates annual servicing requirements. The system achieved 88% patient compliance and improved wound outcomes.
