Summary of Role:
Responsible for organizing and coordinating clients’ tax data for the accurate, timely completion of tax returns with additional supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Functions:
- Establishes and maintains prompt, professional and courteous relationships with clients.
- Performs detail review of tax returns prepared by Senior Associates and Associates.
- Updates Managers and Partners on engagements to ensure quality deliverables and profitability of engagements.
- Ensures the continued success of the department by participating in the recruiting and mentoring programs at the Firm.
- Supervises and trains Seniors and Associates in the tax department to ensure that all engagements are completed on time.
- Reviews tax information submitted by client for completeness; meets with or calls clients with questions and information needs.
- May prepare entity and individual returns of increased complexity.
- Technical knowledge of the Form 990 and all required schedules and Form 990-PF is a bonus.
- May prepare or review excise tax calculations for Private Foundations.
- Prepares amended returns of any variety and complexity.
- Prepares or reviews quarterly tax projections and/or tax provisions.
- Responds to tax notices of any sort and does initial drafts of any letters required.
- Performs tax research project.
- Prepares S-elections, requests for accounting changes, and other tax technical projects as required.
- Maintains a good understanding of depreciation and depreciation computer software packages in order to generate and understand depreciation reports.
- Prepares tax accruals as may be required in supporting corporate tax clients, including for audit support.
- Works with confidential client matters and maintains client confidentiality according to AICPA professional requirement.
Experience, Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- 4-5 years of experience in preparing individual, corporate, and partnership tax returns.
- At least three (3) years experience using computerized tax preparation, tax planning, and tax research software.
- Ability to operate a computer, calculator and other general office equipment.
- Ability to prepare complex and specialized tax returns.
- Ability to conduct special projects as well as tax research.
- Ability to supervise and train tax staff.
- Familiarity with tax filing forms.
Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or related equivalent.
- CPA certification required.
- Minimum of forty hours of continuing professional education is required each year to develop technical and supervisory skills.
Working Conditions:
- Occasional same day travel for meeting with clients or to attend training using a personal vehicle.
- Firmwide week-long meeting held in Los Angeles two times a year, in January and June. In-person attendance required.
- Overtime work required from February to April and from August to October may exceed 55 hours per week.

GHJ complies with all local/state regulations in regards to displaying salary ranges. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, ranges, applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications (e.g. JD, technology), for example. At GHJ, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $110,000-$130,000.
