Job Description Summary
The Department of Surgery is actively recruiting for a Certified Mental Health Clinician. The employee will be a full-time mental health clinician for Turning the Tide Violence Intervention Program (TTVIP) and will provide direct mental health clinical services to patients who have experienced violent injury and are treated at MUSC Health’s Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Centers in downtown Charleston. TTVIP is a hospital-based violence intervention program that aims to address and reduce patient risk factors with the goal of preventing future violent injury and improving injury recovery and quality of life outcomes. TTVIP’s priority population includes patients 12-30 years old who live in the tri-county area and are injured via community violence. The clinician will provide evidence-based, trauma-focused mental health services to patients and their immediate loved ones supported by the TTVIP, regardless of their eligibility for long-term wraparound services. The clinician will provide both early intervention at hospital bedside following injury and longer-term outpatient trauma counseling for patients who screen positive for peritraumatic distress following injury. Clinical responsibilities include conducting diagnostic assessments and delivering treatment for PTSD, depression, and related mental health conditions using a multi-dimensional assessment approach. The clinician will utilize individual and family-based behavioral treatment modalities, including but not limited to: Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Behavioral Activation for Depression, and stress management techniques. In addition, the clinician will assist in planning and implementing victim and family resiliency-building activities related to community violence prevention and response, working closely with the TTVIP team and community partners. Moreover, an emphasis will be placed on increasing access to culturally competent mental health services for underserved populations through individual and group therapy sessions. Duties also involve integrated coordination of services to address unmet social needs that influence access to and utilization of mental health services (e.g., housing, transportation, food insecurity, education, and employment) with TTVIP Client Advocates and community-based resources, and documenting provision of these services in the program database.

Job Duties:
30% - Provide evidence-based mental health early intervention services for survivors of community violence. Implement case management, bedside and outpatient clinical screenings and psychoeducation, and multidisciplinary coordination and referrals for medical psychiatric care or other services, as needed.
30% - Provide evidence-based individual, family, and group, trauma-informed and evidence-based mental health counseling for victims of violence in person, in the community, and via telehealth.
15% - Track program reporting information and victim services documentation in TTVIP’s case management database and patients’ medical records. Maintain documentation to meet reporting and billing requirements and to support case management.
10% - As part of the TTVIP team, the mental health clinician will closely collaborate and communicate with TTVIP Client Advocates to conduct in-hospital bedside screenings to assess patients' risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder and depression following their violent injury, and to provide patients with psychoeducation and brief clinical intervention (e.g., behavioral activation, distress reduction, cognitive coping) relating to mental health recovery during hospitalization.
10% - Participate in clinical supervision, TTVIP-related, and community-based meetings to support coordination and provision of services, as well as provide community- and healthcare-based trainings on trauma and community violence victimization.\
5% - Perform additional administrative duties determined by the TTVIP Program Director relevant to program needs.
Desired Qualifications, Education, and Experience:
“A Master’s degree in Social Work and licensing at the LISW or LISW-CP level in the state of South Carolina are preferred. Candidates must also have a minimum of three years of post-LMSW experience. Clinicians who have experience working with populations of color, traumatic stress populations, and who have training in evidence-based treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder and depression related to trauma (e.g., Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Behavioral Activation for Depression), are especially encouraged to apply. If the candidate does not have these trainings, they must be willing to complete these trainings in the first 6 months of their employment, which our team will facilitate. Knowledge of Excel, SPSS, REDCap, and other databases, such as electronic medical records, to track service delivery is preferred. Effective written and oral communication skills required. Schedule flexibility with advanced notice to work some evenings (to accommodate patients) or occasional weekends (to attend community events) required. This is a hybrid position with in-person work required and some remote work allowable at the discretion of the supervisor.
