Requirements
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in utility design.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • A Professional Engineer license in North Carolina, or the ability to obtain one as part of career development.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation V8i or OpenRoads to develop plan sets, cut profiles using digital terrain model and triangulated irregular network files, and create proposed surfaces from roadway cross sections.
  • Competence using Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
  • Ability to learn Microsoft Project for project scheduling.
  • A proficient background in designing water lines and mains, sanitary pump stations, force mains, and gravity sewers.
  • Experience with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software for analyzing water distribution systems.
  • Site design experience developing site and grading plans for proposed station sites.
  • Ability to read Department of Transportation plans to differentiate between existing and proposed conditions.
  • Ability to perform utility conflict analyses between proposed roadway or hydraulic designs and existing utilities to determine conflict points.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organization, and time management skills.
  • A valid driver's license.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the Project Manager with engineering work.
  • Develop utility design plan sets for transportation and municipal projects in accordance with formats required by the North Carolina Department of Transportation or the municipality.
  • Prepare utility construction special provisions and specifications in accordance with North Carolina Department of Transportation and municipal utility owner requirements.
  • Prepare cost and quantity estimates for projects at various design stages.
  • Prepare and submit permit packages to state agencies or self-permitting municipalities.
  • Travel within North Carolina to client meetings and project sites, and potentially to other company offices and industry conferences or seminars outside North Carolina.
  • Perform on-site field work, including verifying existing utility conditions, observing contractors and sub-consultants during construction, and verifying as-built facility conditions.
  • Prepare legible, concise, scaled notes and drawings.
  • Represent and promote the company at project meetings, conferences, and professional society events.
  • Work independently with minimal direction and interact with client and utility owner points of contact to manage assigned work.
