Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Automation/Controls, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required.
  • Requires 0–5 years of experience installing, maintaining, or supporting plant-floor mechanical, electrical, and/or automation systems in a manufacturing setting.
  • Working knowledge of programmable logic controllers, human-machine interfaces, and industrial instrumentation such as flow, pressure, temperature, level, and pH.
  • Basic understanding of electrical control panels and industrial networking concepts.
  • Knowledge of PLC programming, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
  • Knowledge of HMI/SCADA configuration, alarm management, and user interface design.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation calibration, configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read and create P&IDs, electrical schematics, logic diagrams, and control narratives.
  • Knowledge of root cause analysis, corrective actions, and preventive maintenance planning for control systems.
  • Basic database and network concepts related to industrial automation.
  • Ability to use company-issued uniform and personal protective equipment and follow company safety procedures and regulations.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform standing, walking, scooping, kneeling, and crouching in wet, humid, dusty, and noisy production environments.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems supporting manufacturing operations.
  • Create, test, and document PLC control logic and HMI interfaces for new and existing equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and isolate mechanical, electrical, and controls issues to minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Work with maintenance personnel to implement repairs and control system changes while minimizing production impact.
  • Interpret, update, and help develop P&IDs, equipment lists, logic diagrams, schematics, control narratives, and network diagrams.
  • Coordinate with outside mechanical and electrical contractors and integrators to complete work outside MDG core competencies.
  • Integrate standalone equipment into the corporate network for remote monitoring, data collection, and control.
  • Perform and document PLC, HMI, and SCADA software updates, including backups, version control, and change management.
  • Develop interfaces and data flows to collect production data into databases or historians such as SQL Server to support reporting and analysis.
  • Analyze process data and trends to identify improvement opportunities and implement control system changes to improve process stability, yield, and throughput.
  • Support startup, commissioning, and validation of new equipment, automation upgrades, and process changes.
  • Provide training and basic troubleshooting guidance to operators and maintenance personnel on automated systems.
  • Evaluate current and emerging automation technologies for potential application.
  • Provide support during non-routine work hours for startups, shutdowns, or critical troubleshooting.
  • Participate in cross-functional continuous improvement, root cause analysis, and safety initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development and periodic review of standard operating procedures and best practices related to process controls and automation.
  • Collaborate regularly with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and R&D teams and external vendors.
  • Follow food safety procedures under FDA regulations, including the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in fermentation, biotechnology, food, pharmaceutical, or chemical manufacturing.
  • Hands-on experience with PLC platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, ABB, or similar.
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA software such as FactoryTalk, AVEVA InTouch, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with process instrumentation and industrial communication networks such as Ethernet/IP, Profibus, and Modbus.
  • Familiarity with operational technology cybersecurity best practices.
  • Experience with data collection tools, historians, or basic data analytics such as SQL and dashboards.

The Bacillus Fermentation Company Expands Capacity for Microbial Growth and Scale-UpFRANKLIN, Wis., April 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Microbial Discovery Group (MDG), an RD-driven product development, scale-up, and large-scale Bacillus fermentation company, continues construction of its new production facility in southeastern Wisconsin. Since its establishment in 2007, MDG has demonstrated significant growth, positioning itself at the forefront of developing and commercializing microbial solutions for the animal health, agriculture, bioremediation, industrial and institutional, wastewater treatment, and human health markets. In addition to MDG's other two facilities in Oak Creek and Franklin, MDG will be opening a new 117,000-square-foot facility located at 3303 W. Oakwood Road in Franklin. The second Franklin location will create 46 new full-time jobs. MDG will be investing over $30 million into the facility over the next three years
