Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Successful completion of a Medical Terminology examination and basic electrocardiogram course is required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is required.
  • The ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently is required.
  • Excellent customer service behavior is required.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Los Angeles City Fire Life Safety Training certification is required; if no card is available upon hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and maintained through renewal before expiration.
Responsibilities
  • Perform clerical functions on the assigned nursing unit, including maintaining census information, completing admission/discharge/transfer entries, following downtime procedures, submitting repair requests, maintaining logs and forms, ordering supplies, and keeping the work area and office equipment stocked and organized.
  • Transcribe patient-care orders completely, accurately, and promptly; prioritize stat orders, notify the registered nurse, scan orders to pharmacy, order tests by computer entry, transcribe to the Kardex, and flag telephone orders for signatures.
  • Provide courteous and compassionate customer service to patients, visitors, and hospital personnel in person, by telephone, and in writing; answer phones and call lights promptly and route requests to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain patient medical records by assembling admission charts, adding required forms, filing diagnostic and laboratory reports, replacing chart dividers, and placing discharge and thinned charts in the Health Information Management basket.
  • Complete assignments, collaborate with management and staff, communicate outstanding patient-care activities during handoff, orient new unit secretaries, assist physicians and staff with computerized hospital or patient information, and maintain communication with the charge registered nurse.
  • Monitor and correctly interpret electrocardiogram rhythms and electroencephalogram patterns for seizure activity, promptly notify the registered nurse or charge nurse of changes or concerns, maintain monitoring equipment, and document notification times on rhythm strips.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
