Mechanical Lab Technician

Job Summary

A Mechanical Lab Technician is responsible for supporting mechanical testing, experimentation, calibration, and maintenance activities in laboratories, research facilities, educational institutions, or manufacturing environments. The role involves preparing test specimens, operating laboratory equipment, recording test data, maintaining laboratory safety standards, and assisting engineers in product development, validation, and quality assurance activities.

Key Responsibilities

• Set up, operate, and maintain mechanical testing equipment and laboratory instruments.
• Prepare test samples, fixtures, and experimental setups according to test procedures.
• Perform mechanical tests such as tensile, compression, hardness, fatigue, impact, vibration, and material characterization testing.
• Collect, record, and analyze test data
• Generate test reports and maintain laboratory records and documentation.
• Calibrate measuring instruments and testing equipment as per established schedules.
• Troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate repairs when necessary.
• Ensure compliance with laboratory safety regulations and quality standards.
• Maintain inventory of laboratory consumables, tools, and spare parts.
• Assist engineers in conducting experiments validating designs.
• Support root cause analysis and failure investigations.
• Keep laboratory areas clean, organized, and audit ready.

Required Qualifications

• Diploma or Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Relevant experience in a mechanical testing laboratory is preferred.
• Knowledge of engineering drawings and measurement techniques.
• Familiarity with mechanical testing standards such as ASTM, ISO, or DIN standards.

Proficiency in using laboratory instruments and measuring equipment.

Required Skills

• Mechanical testing and measurement techniques.
• Operation of Universal Testing Machines (UTM), hardness testers, and metrology equipment shall be an advantage
• Knowledge of calibration procedures.
• Data recording and report preparation.
• Basic computer skills (MS Office, Excel, laboratory software).
• Problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• Need to know English.

Working Conditions

• Laboratory and workshop environment.
• May require handling heavy equipment and test specimens.
• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, and safety shoes.
• May involve standing for extended periods and conducting repetitive testing activities.
