Requirements
  • Be a Solicitor, Barrister or Legal Executive.
  • For the Grade 7 role, have 3 or more years of legal experience since qualification and/or demonstrate relevant legal skills, ability and 3 or more years of experience as a solicitor, barrister or legal executive in the designated legal disciplines.
  • Have an honours degree, preferably in law, or significant relevant experience as a Lawyer for Grade 6; for Grade 7, have an honours degree, preferably in law, or 3 or more years of experience as a Lawyer.
  • Have a postgraduate-level qualification in law or equivalent experience as a desirable qualification.
  • Have the motivation to solve legal problems and a practical, strategic approach to advice.
  • Have research, analysis and communication skills.
  • Be able to manage and process high volumes of documentation and information to provide clear advice and effective case management.
  • Be aware of the political, reputational and financial factors affecting the Council’s decision-making.
Responsibilities
  • Represent the Council in civil litigation and dispute resolution matters or criminal and enforcement litigation.
  • Research legal issues and draft legal documents and advice.
  • Translate complex legal concepts into clear written and verbal guidance for professionals and stakeholders.
  • Prioritise and manage multiple cases.
  • Guide the Council through complex legal issues and represent it in proceedings.
  • Ensure that Council policies remain legally sound and up to date.
  • Act on behalf of the Council in prosecutions and enforcement matters relating to Trading Standards, Fire and Rescue Services, Planning and Fraud.
  • Act on behalf of the Council in debt recovery, judicial review, insurance litigation, personal injury litigation, contract-related disputes and contentious administrative and public law.
  • Deliver high-quality legal services and continuously develop professional expertise.
  • For the Grade 7 role, line-manage Paralegals and Caseworkers and support their training and development.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from other teams or departments to resolve complex legal issues.
