What believers are saying

  • IMCO added City of Hamilton on July 30, 2026, expanding its local footprint.
  • 2025 return was 7.4%, and AUM grew to $90.7 billion by April 2026.
  • Cost per $100 of AUM fell 10% in 2025, signaling operating leverage.

What critics are saying

  • TIP Group closes only after 2027 approvals; antitrust or foreign-investment rejection stalls the deal.
  • OPB and WSIB still anchor IMCO; one client pullback would hit scale fast.
  • Political scrutiny from Ontario legislators could force fee cuts or mandate changes after underperformance.

What makes Investment Management Corporation of Ontario unique

  • Ontario statute gives IMCO an independent board and public-sector mandate.
  • IMCO manages $90.7 billion, with one-third invested in Canada as of April 2026.
  • Its infrastructure team buys direct assets like TIP Group, not just public equities.
