Requirements
  • At least 5 years of experience programming in Python and/or C/C++.
  • Experience developing software to control real robots.
  • Experience with non-GPS robot localization techniques such as inertial navigation systems, extended Kalman filters, factor graphs, or simultaneous localization and mapping.
  • A degree in Computer Science or a related field, or demonstrated excellence at coding through significant professional experience.
  • Outstanding communication skills.
  • A desire to make humans a multi-planet species.
  • The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
Responsibilities
  • Design a technical approach that addresses the specific challenges of rover localization on the Moon.
  • Develop software for accurately determining the rover's position on the lunar surface based on sensor data such as inertial measurement units, cameras, light detection and ranging, odometry, a star tracker, sun sensors, and terrain matching.
  • Test and evaluate localization performance on rover prototypes at the lunar analog test site.
  • Test and evaluate localization performance in Gazebo-based mission simulations based on NASA lunar terrain data.
  • Work closely with other software team members to integrate localization with other parts of the autonomy system, such as path planning and hazard avoidance.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with outdoor robots and/or autonomous vehicles.
  • Experience with robots operating in natural terrain.
  • Experience with light detection and ranging-based localization, such as light detection and ranging odometry or light detection and ranging simultaneous localization and mapping.
  • Experience with vision-based localization, such as visual odometry or visual simultaneous localization and mapping.
  • Experience with terrain matching techniques for localization.
  • Experience programming in Robot Operating System or Robot Operating System 2.
  • Experience with robot simulators such as Gazebo or Mujuco.
  • Experience developing software for aerospace applications.
  • Experience developing and deploying software in production.

Starpath Robotics designs and builds robotic factories that can operate on the Moon and Mars to mine local resources, refine them into rocket propellant, and distribute it as a space refueling infrastructure. Its product works by deploying autonomous or remotely operated factory units that extract water ice, process it into propellant, and supply rockets and landers with fuel, enabling in-situ production of propellant for deep-space missions. Unlike others that may offer individual components, Starpath aims to provide a full-stack hardware system for ISRU-based propellant production and distribution as a service, targeting both private space companies and government agencies. The company’s goal is to establish a space refueling station that significantly lowers the cost of moving payloads in deep space by eliminating the need to launch heavy fuel from Earth, supporting the vision of long-term off-world colonies and multi-planet humanity.

Starpath Robotics raises $12M seed funding

Starpath Robotics, founded by former SpaceX engineers, raised $12 million in seed funding to develop reusable lunar spacecraft technology. The startup plans to mine lunar ice for water to create rocket propellant, enabling spacecraft to refuel and return to Earth.
